Does anyone have any idea of the value of second hand sails, and where is the best place to sell them.

Having recently purchased a boat with quite a lot of sails I have managed to get around to sorting them out.

The boat has roller reefing on both main and jib so I have two sails which are not much use to me.

One is the main. It is in very good condition and has loads of life in it. It is clean and crackly feeling with nice bright steel fittings. All in all it is in great nick. Has sail slides fitted.
SIze is 4m foot , 9.8m luff and 10.66m leach.

It is for a nicholson 32 but will probably fit similar sized boats.

I also have a hank on jib for the same boat. This is much more tired and slightly discoloured with a few stains on it. It seems workable. and probably has a few seasons left in it.
The stitching is good and there are no patches or repairs I can see. It really needs a clean but may be of use to someone. Size is 4m 7.7 m and 6.8m.

Any idea what these are worth and where is best to advertise them?

Thanks in Advance for your help

Brian

I've sold all my surplus sails on ebay - make sure you describe them accurately with several photos of critical areas, make sure you add a P&P price; if in excellent condition make sure you put a realistic starting price/reserve. Alternatively put them on a 'Buy it Now' price, with option for 'Offers' and list for 30 days. Another site is Boats and Outboards.co.uk. Don't overprice them and they will sell. OR - is there a Nicholson Owners Club where you could advertise them? Good Luck anyway.

I used to take mine to a boat jumble where I got between £20 and £100 for them but they were well used, never had any trouble getting rid of them though.
Since your main sounds good and for a popular boat it should sell well, the trouble is that the condition can only be ascertained by inspection. The value will be something below 50% of the cost of replacement, probably well below, unless it is pristine and unstretched but if you are selling on Ebay or on here you need to discount it enough to encourage someone to take the risk that it may not be quite as good as you think. Some sailmakers deal in good second hand sails, some one will be along soon with a recommendation.
The other sail is worth whatever offer you can get.

I don't wish to appear rude, but maybe you are showing a lack of experience by asking this question in the first place; roller reefing is not the answer to everything, and those spare sails might come in handy !

If you do decide the sails are surplus to requirements, the first place I'd go is a class / owners' association.

second hand sails

I am looking for secondhand sails for an art installation project. They do not need to be 'sea worthy'. Just ones that are no longer practical but will be given a new life.
