Today I braved the cold in the workshop and began dismantling my Seawolf 500 windlass, which refused to operate. Having removed the gear cover I released a couple of pints of water, which went at least some of the way to explaining its non-function. A fair volume of water was found in the electric motor but after drying it and cleaning out the rust this is now operating. So it seems it is worth getting it back into operation.

The first problem is lubrication. The gears are coated in a grease emulsion at present. Can anyone tell me the correct lubricant, please? Ideally a manual would be nice but SL spares don't list it and want £10 for the 520, which may or not be the same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I rebuilt my (520) a year ago. After cleaning out all the gungy grease from the gear case -I decided a new gasket was warranted- and also for the motor housing. The main shaft bearings I also replaced as they had seized.
All was re-assembled with reasonable quality water resistant marine grease.
The effort was rewarded by it working exactly as it should!
There is nothing very complex about the construction, and the only extra work I did was to bead blast the rust & corrosion away from the parts once stripped down.
Most SL stuff was quite solid.
