As a spin off from my boat data hub project here I had the idea that a much cheaper simplified version could be made that takes Seatalk 1 as an input and converts it to NMEA-0183 and makes the data available via Bluetooth that could be picked up by OpenCPN or other chart plotter running on a laptop or tablet. It would be bi-directional - data would go both ways so routes and waypoints would be put on the Seatalk bus. Would there be any interest in this?

Definitely interested.
I used to enjoy your previous posts and am pleased that you have resurrected the YAPP posts with the latest project. I'm still using the remote control unit I got from you a few years ago. Works perfectly still.
Much of the technical detail goes above my head but I still like to fiddle with this sort of stuff on my boat when I have the time.

Very much!
With a serial output as well :) And code :) And gerber/BOM/pickNplace files for jlcpcb :)

Or would be happy reading about anything you create

The idea is that there won't be anything other than Seatalk 1 one side and Bluetooth the other. No serial ports or anything else to keep it simple and cheap. It will use a Blue Pill and I will assemble the boards supplied as an assembled programmed board with a connector for Seatalk 1 and nothing else. I am set up for using Design Spark and through hole technology - that's what I have the designs, schematics, layouts and components for so to keep it simple that's what it will use. It will be open source.

Would love this. Have a MacBook, Windows laptop and Android tablet all with no GPS. I have a little bluetooth GPS, but it is small and easily misplaced and it must be kept charged separately.

It would be good for it to have 1 NMEA port for AIS input to also send to OpenCPN

Thinking about it I could use the same PCB as the Boat Data Hub project but not fit the LCD/contrast adjustment/backlight control, buzzer, RF module, pressure sensor, RS232 GPS input/output/power control or buttons. The board would be bigger than necessary but save on effort of designing a new one. It would have Seatalk, AIS input and Bluetooth only.

The ability to link NMEA0183 in/output from a Garmin plotter to a laptop or tablet running Open CPN via Bluetooth would be very handy indeed. Planning on the laptop and transferring routes to the cockpit plotter would cutout a lot of graft.

That's great I'll have one please
