Is there anything special about this apart from the connectors? Seems to be simple overall screened 2 core.

I bought 4 core woven screened and tinned from Maplin for £1.29 per metre (for fluxgate compass connection).

There are 3 lines used, so it's either 2 core and use the screen for ground, or 3 core. With the big voltage swing on the data line and the low data rate it's not particularly susceptible to interference. The power lines needs to be big enough for the current used by the devices at the far end to avoid voltage drop.
 
As above, except that ST cable is tinned so try to get tinned cable if you can, I still have half a drum of RM stuff and as I recall it was only a little more than sourcing a compatible cable from New England Cables,
