I’m installing a Raymarine ST4000+ autopilot and the aecondhand fluxgate compass thingy only has a very short tail of cable and needs an approx 10 meter length. So, two questions, firstly is the 5 core cable (including the screen) available by the meter anywhere? Secondly, can I join the new bit of cable to the original cable to extend the length or would it best & a simple job to open up the compass unit and replace the entire length in one piece - I’m loathe to open up delicate electronics if unnecessary.

Just get some 5 core screened cable, it's ok to join it.
