Looking to buy a boat for extended cruising, starting in the Med for several years, then probably over to carib for a while. 2 people on board, 40~45 ft is my plan- Has anybody any experience of Seastream boats? Iv'e been hearing both V good and V bad reports from my own contacts- Does anyone have any actual experience?

I made my purchase last July, but was looking for 8 months prior to that. I narrowed my field down to Seastream,Hallberg Rassy and Oyster. All much of a muchness I thought HR better value for money than both the Oyster 485 and Seastream and I thought quite a bit about resale after our 4-6 years of use. We are in Portugal at the moment and heading for the Med for two to three years then a circumnavigation. I opted for a HR 46 as it had most of the +'s and very few of the -'s we had listed. Like you I heard good and bad about them and that was not the case wrt HR or Oyster.

Thanks for your answer, strangely enough, your shortlist looks very similar to ours! We are looking at the seastream because of the deck saloon layout, which HR don't offer, and Oysters are v. expensive for any recent boat. So..it's back to the drawing board I guess!
Thanks again

Don't know what your budget is, or whether you even want to consider steel, but have you thought about a Moonen 14M? It will have the accommodation you require, and the deck saloon, and you are highly unlikely to ever hear bad said of Moonen - thoroughly fantastic Dutch craftmanship. Berthons have one I noticed and others are available, particularly the 14m which seems to be more widely available than the 12.5M.

Our requirements are almost identical to yours and we have just bought a Nauticat 42. We did look at one Seastream but it didn't appeal to us - but don't know anything negative about them. Would sincerely recommend you consider Nauticat - having looked at several in depth recently I can give you some info if you are interested...send me a PM

Bryan.

Have you considered a catamaran? Loads more room (important for long term liveaboard) for the money and some very good solid seaboats around (Privilege, Prout, Catana)
