Seame, AIS alarm feature

Hi

I’m fitting these two devices to my boat and I would be grateful for some advice regarding setting up the alarm feature. My main worry is that if I just wire a buzzer up to the devices then it will only sound very briefly, say as the device is swept by a radar, and won’t continually sound to get my attention. Both instruction manuals are mute on the matter.

Seame buzzes almost continuously when a radar activates it.

It alerts the sailor that he's been swept by a radar.

We've had a season's SeaMe use and would have ripped out a buzzer by now...although one with multiple tones/tunes from Maplin was considered. I can just imagine firstmate's response on a night passage...which was just one of the reasons for considering and then rejecting, however, for the solo sailors it might help keep them awake and alert...don't forget that SeaMe only listens on "X" or is it "S"...and may not give the impression that you are a super-tanker...although its use might account for a close pass in excellent visibility by a large trawler in the middle of the North Sea who may just have been nosy and once in dense fog I'd assured firstmate that no large boats would be close inshore...and the next morning when the fog had lifted, anchored where one is warned to stay clear because of cables, was "Jura" - probably just a coincidence? Now AIS "B", SeaMe and Radar + reflector: may reduce our chances of being run down by a fast ferry or other vessel but they are all (apart from reflector) dependent on electricity and sod's law may dictate failure at a very inappropriate time...Best stay at home!

Thanks for the advice, the intention was to fit a switch to the wiring arrangement so that the buzzer could be switched off when not needed.

Do you have an alarm feature on your AIS?

AIS "B" may have to wait until next year...spent all pocket money and then some...
