I have to screw some fittings into a varnished mahogany capping, and wish to seal the pilot holes so the timber doesn't draw in moisture and go black with time. CT1 / Sikawhat around the screw before running it in?, or get some epoxy into the pilot hole? or what is best for a long term solution keeping the option of removing the screws later? All the mahogany has been coated with two pack polyurethane.

Thanks, as ever

have you used butyl tape before ? It seems to gaining in popularity as it is inert, never sets hard, and is properly waterproof. That's what I am using for bedding down all my deck fittings shortly, some into timber, some into GRP.

There's avery good thread on Cruisers Forum about butyl.

I've got some to seal an aluminium roof hatch back in place but I don't see that if would do this job. It's funny stuff compared to mastic type material and I don't think it would "flow" into / around screws to seal pilot holes. Although it looks perfect for the flat seal situation of the roof hatch. I've got 52 pilot holes in teak to seal soon so am interested in experience too.

By the way. If you want Butyl tape don't buy it on line. It weighs a ton so they charge to top dollar to post it. Local glaziers had loads in stock for less than the base price online.
