With a serious offer on the table for "Ki-La" I have been trawling the internet looking for a Sealine S28 (within budget!) and have found two. One is listed on Essex boatyards, but has the AD engine, the other at Burnham on Crouch has the prefereable KAD 32s. This boat looks to be in fair condition with a not too dated upholstery. What is putting me off a 300 mile round trip to view it is the outdrives. Looking at the picture there does not appear to be any paint left on them, and I would be worried about corrosion/reliability issues. Are these normal condition for a 1998 boat, if so how would they need to be treated to refurbish them, or should I discount this boat and carry on searching??
The S28 at Essex Boatyards looks good, with a re-upholstered cockpit and new canopy this year and could be a contender, but opinion suggests go for KAD 32s...not sure

To me, the outdrives look ok. They have been pressure washed. Much of the original paint has become leeched off, but this does not inherently mean a problem. As long as they have been properly serviced, they should be fine.

Paint can be fixed in a couple of weekends IF the corrosion isn't so bad that the drives are badly pitted. It's hard to tell from the photos either way.
Having the right engines from the word go is more important, imho.
The drives do need to be checked out though ... drain a little oil out to check for water/milkshake/filings, check the trim rams don't leak, hoses, etc all good, if poss, check UJ bellows for water.
Port propellors look a bit dodgy, but again, budget to change.

You are correct in thinking the AD31 is the less desireable engine choice , which means possible difficulty selling on. But this should be reflected in the price. And there are no superchargers so less to go wrong.
A pair of kad32's power the much larger S34. So the AD31 with 20hp less per engine should be okay in the S28. I have seen video of a slighly larger and older sealine 30 with ad31's and it planed okay and topped out at 29 knots . Maybe a bit more time required to get on the plane but does that matter ?

Not really sure what the photograph is showing but if its with a broker why not phone and ask ? It could be that the picture was taken whan the legs have been rubbed down ready for paint ? Otherwise the antifoul looks in good nick and a gap has correctly been left around the transom shields . So it might be a well maintained boat.

A 300 mile round trip is just a day out, no? Given how close they are, why not just go and look at them both on the same day? Got to be better than Christmas shopping...

+1 if you are seriously interested in the two boats

Having looked at the photo I am not thinking that there is any sign of corrosion and as suggested, a quick chat with the broker may well help put your mind at rest.

Unusual that somebody would go to the frankly awful job of of removing every last fleck of paint and then leave the bare aluminium to corrode.
Think before any paint is applied(inc primer) that the alloy needs to be etched.
May well be that the photo was taken before legs were painted ?

ours looked a lot worse than that after 2 years of sitting in the briny a little work and now look at them. as said check the oils and for any water ingress.drive.jpg

Perhaps they are not so bad then. I am going to speak to both brokers later, and get some information particularly about service history, and probably aim to look at both of them.

Are Volspec - the Volvo agents not at both locations - maybe you could ask them for their view as to the condition.

Good Luck

From the picture they look ok to me. The 'skeg' at the bottom doesn't look corroded at all and would be one of the first places to show signs of wear. Also the anodes looks to be in ok condition therefore have had a certain amount of protection.

Another idea would be to ask IVSS Marine whether the drives look OK and what they'd charge to refurb them (http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...arine-anyone-had-issues&p=4436550#post4436550).

The KAD32 boat will be miles more fun and the £3k saving would go a fair way towards a cosmetic refurb inside. Would be well worth removing the dated graphics from the Clarke & Carter boat and replace with later ones (as has been done on the EBY boat). That said, we all know that you'll get excellent service from EBY if you decide to buy from them.

Must say these S28's are continuing to look great VFM.

Friend of mine is selling a 2001 S28. Pretty sure new cockpit upholstery and new covers etc. Think he wants £35-45k (don't quote me on that though). Email me if it was of any interest. Mike

I have enquired about both of these in the last few months. Hopefully completing this Friday on our chosen S28 which after careful consideration was a bit newer with KAD32's.

The one at Essex Boat yards was under offer and priced a few k less, it then has come back on the market for a bit more money. Not sure why - maybe it failed a survey and all of the work has now been completed and they are now trying for a bit more cash.

Have you seen the one listed on the Conway? Its got AD31's but later wood joinery, reasonably new upholstery in the cabin as well.

A few things our surveyor mentioned that need checking on 28's - firstly spray rails can have a tough life if used at sea and can start to show stress cracks and secondly in a similar theme any minor hairline cracking anywhere in the cockpit floor might suggest hard use and some hull flexing. The latter being easy to check if it doesn't have teak flooring. Ours had neither thankfully - overall very solid boats that generally survey very well was his view. Lastly are leaks from the radar arch - somehow the water gets in, runs along the top, down the inside and finally into lockers and bilges. Again not a major issue but something he said he sees very often on them.

The owner of the EBY listed boat bought it for the summer having sold his Princess 420. Now surplus to requirements as he will have his F36 on the water for next season. New covers and upholstery, new plotter and other mods done to improve the boat, hence a rise in price. He was very happy with the performance of the boat.

Volspec on site at EBY.

That would explain it then :-)

Looks a clean boat overall - we were originally interested when it first came to market but EBY PX didnt work too well for us and then it showed under offer. When we had a firm offer on ours I came across it again as a new listing hence me wondering whether it actually sold the first time around. Just shows I shouldnt jump to conclusions!!!
