I was talking to a broker about an S28 local to me which looks as if it has been withdrawn from sale, when he mentioned another he has listed in Mallorca. She has the KAD 32s and is a year 2002 for less money than the 1996 AQ I have been looking at. Apparently she needs some TLC as she has been used as a floating caravan. I am making enquiries about servicing/hours run etc, but the main issue will be getting her back. What sort of cost would I be looking at for Mallorca to Torquay. Would it need to be a low loader or would she fit onto a large four wheel trailer and a big 4x4? It does look like an interesting proposition but if all the associated costs start mounting too high it may not be worth it. Do fancy a trip to Mallorca though....

sorry to put a downer on this one but floating caravans, especially in hot sunny climes are to be avoided in my opinion as you can be pretty sure the engines and in particular, the drives are likely to be shot. I'd be surprised if the anodes have been changed on the drives which will show lots of corrosion when the hanging garden of seaweed has been removed from them. Then there's the potential sun damage to the canopy, gelcoat and helm position, especially if the helm is the new blue colour. The money you save will likely be lost in transport and cost getting the mechanics of the boat sorted. Has the broker covered off these aspects with you to give you confidence it's not a lemon

Too big to be towed.

I'd speak to Russell at coast to coast transport , they do go over to the island but its expensive on the ferry for large HGV, plus the usual 5k return load. Then again if the boats a steal do it. Of course go over and do the sums on condition.

The main problem as said will be the drives or maybe lack of them if its been neglected. From an insurance point of view the boat must be regularly maintained to comply with the regs. No harm in having a look if its cheap.

Am I missing something. A boat in Mallorca and you want to spend hard earned money bringing it back
To the uk?

Why?

Berthing is cheaper , the sea is warm and the season 6 months long. Oh and flight cost peanuts. And yes my boat is there!

I have asked more detailed info about the boat in particular usage and servicing etc as that is my main concern. I am aware that low usage engines are worse than high, so that would need close investigation. Ideally I would like to buy local but from what I have told this boat looks to be an absolute bargain. Even factoring new drives on top of shipping she could still come in substantialy cheaper than one of equivalent year purchased here. I am going to wait for this information before possibly going over for a look. If nothing else it wil be a nice break. I am still looking over here though.

If you could take the boat to the mainland costs would be greatly reduced and a wonderful trip/sense of achievement, all depends on condition of course. I bought my boat (38ft) in Ibiza and steamed it across to Denia where it went on a lorry as a return load, cost £3,500, this was 5 years ago so prices will be slightly more now I guess.

If it is a real bargain and if you really do want it back in Torquay then a cheaper approach would be to take it on its own bottom to Sant Carles
Coast to Coast are often at Sant Carles so there would be an opportunity of shipping it back from there.
The difficult bit would be making it seaworthy for the 100 mile run from Mallorca to Sant Carles.
If you picked the weather and teamed up with one of us running back a forth, it could be done.

Thats another possibility. I am still waiting for more infomation on the boat before going any further with it. I have heard of a nice boat in the UK which may scrape into the budget..
