Does anybody know what system was used on the propshaft gland on Sealine 360 statesman? I know part of it is the usual adjustable type but there is also a plastic pipe fitted to each side presumably for coolingThe thing that puzzles me is how a piece of what looks like cutlass bearing with no brass backing ended up sticking out of where the propshaft enters the boat.unfortunatly we didn't check the cutlass bearing, any way I can't see how it could have come out and made its way into that gap.So is it from the gland ?unless it's a different system that I have never seen before.
Weird

Tried to post pictures but they wouldn't download

Is it part of the earthing system, they used a slip ring and brushes.

It's a half piece of used cutlass bearing with no backing, not sure how it could be used for earthing

There was a brass flange on the prop shaft, a arm with a carbon brush ran on it, the arm connected to battery neg, earthing prop shaft and propeller.

Where the prop shaft enters the boat you normally have a cutless bearing ( as well as one in the P bracket). The cutless bearing is normally a brass carrier sleeve with an inner rubber bearing bonded ( glued) in it , sometimes it is a phenolic tube with a rubber bearing in it. It sounds like the rubber has split or come unbounded from the carrier. The cutless bearing needs replacing.

The sterngland is above the cutless bearing and towards the engine and separate to the cutless bearing.

With two pipes feeding it it sounds like a water fed bearing, fed from the cooling seawater from the engine if the rubber hose is Blue its probably a Tidesmarine or red maybe a PSS. How old is it?

I agree with Bandit, the rubber bearing has separated from its carrier and started to slide out. Of course I would say change it for a composite bearing to replace the rubber but I am biased(informed) in my views on bearing materials.

If the Stern seal is a Deep sea seal they have a life of about 5 to 7 years then replace, Volvo Penta stern seal 5 years then replace Tidesmarine 7 years then dismantle inspect replace the lip seal and similar for the others.

If the boat is a 96 and you don't know the age of the stern seal you should assume the worst and replace.

If you can fit one a Tidesmarine with a spare seal mounted on the shaft further up is as good as you can get.
