I don't think the Peters set up has been working with Sealine since day one. They spent so many years slating the brand it was always going to be a tough turn around, but I think it was their stance on trade in's that was probably the big nail in the coffin.

Sealine have always done very well keeping owners in the brand by offer trade up incentives, and I always understood it was Peters, not Sealine, who put a stop to that.

It will be interesting to see who is manning the stand at SIBS, and how comfortable/competant they are. With the change over happening on the 1st, two weeks before the show logistics will be very interesting.

i should imagine Sealine have known the deal would end for quite a while and plans were already afoot for SIBS.

As i pointed out on another thread Sealine still have all the old dealers like Burton Waters, who now have three sites.

I suppose that begs the question just how many dealers does a brand need?

I think they have too many. They are doing what BMW has been doing for the last 5 years - eroding their own brand because of too many independant competing dealers each being forced to take too much stock.

It isn't even good news for the consumer. You would think competition and lower prices would be a good thing, but when you come to sell your year old boat and the dealers have a car park full of new, fully paid identical boats you don't stand a chance - unless you really discount the used one - so any savings are wiped out and then some.

There is no problem with the boats - the S29 is one of the most interesting and well thought out sub 30ft boats around but the in-built dealer competition and over stock is wrecking it.

Look at BMW. Five years ago it was a safe bet that your used car was desirable and easy to sell on for a fair price. You had to wait 6 months for a new one on most cases and dealers would be reluctant to budge on price. Now there are 6,000 new cars parked in a field somewhere, dealers have massive targets so will rip the price out just to get the bonus and as a result your current car drops like a stone.

Selaine are going the same way - which is a shame.

I guess part of the answer is in the headline, Ancasta appear to be the South Coast Dealer as Burton Waters are the dealer in another area, unlike Peters who were the Master Distributor. I guess all the old dealers get to buy direct from the factory again

All the new boats used to go through Sealine Sales down south before Peters took the "main" title. and Peters continued that system.

I wonder if the same will happen with Ancasta.
I recently met the guy who delivered my boat to BW in Lincoln. he took south before heading north.

re 29.. yes, interesting. Had a look at LBS. I think by the time it was spec'd up nicely, it came to £150/160k. For 29ft. For a Sealine. Not that interesting, I concluded.
But wow, didnt matter which boat you looked at on their stand. None of the sales guys I talked to gave the impression of much enthusiasm in the product. Blimey, if the salesman isnt, how am I going to be!

And according to my owners handbook overall length is 30' 8 1/2"

But if i want a mooring i quote the hull length of 29' 5 1/2"

Not Surprised,

The Peters guys at SIBS last year were shockingly bad. I took SWMBO on the S29 and she hated it so I showed her S34. The saleswomen on-board did not even acknowledge us. She then eventually spoke very ruddely to us and walked off when we asked for PX. Never even said goodbye!

RIP Peters and their attitude!

In Contrast Ancaster have always been great so I think they will do a better job!

Given Sealines recent trading figures I guess they had to try and do something...

Be interesting to see if Ancasta can do more from a standing start than Peters could with a bit of a run up.

Look at what Ancaster have achieved with Bavaria. They have taken it from Zero sales to very good sales.

Lets see them resurect Sealine.

On a seperate point I travel up and down M40 every day and this year I have seen less Sealines being moved than ever before!

Lots of secondhand tosh though!

Cheers

Yup, meeting some of the Peters guys at boat shows, you got the feeling that they felt really awkward about selling a brand that was not only a competitor but perceived as a bit more downmarket than their previous brand
Actually what nobody seems to have mentioned is that Sealine probably also felt that Azimut were too much of a direct competitor for Peters to focus 100% on Sealine. I'm sure that peeps at Peters will not lose too much sleep over this. Azimut is good brand to have. They're a rapidly expanding company and Peters can grow their sales accordingly. And there's still the steady income from the marina as well

Julie,

I think Sealine have been the backbone of the UK Boat Market for over 20 years. Whilst others have moved on to bigger/fancier stuff Sealine have stayed in the lower end of the market. This is essential and allows people to get into boats. I may occasionally berate them, but I admire them as well.

I hope Ancaster keep it all going or we may see less profitable models (S25/S29) cut out and that would be a real shame. Neither boat appeals to me but they do to a lot of people.

Cheers
