I am about to fit a new fire extinguisher system to the engine room area, can anybody tell me the cubic area of the engine room. or the required size of fire extinguisher for the boat. The existing system was two Halon extinguishers which have now been removed and I want to fit one extinguisher for the whole area. Thanks

My S37 has two extinguishers in the engine room. I can only think there is a very good reason for having two rather than one bigger one so stick with the Sealine spec. Sorry my Sealine is 500 miles away so can't give you sizes but perhaps some one else can.
Also insurance companies are a bit sensitive on moves away from spec on safety equipment so be careful.

Don't know about Sealine spec, but would recommend 2 extinguishers rather than 1 large - both to be able to be fired manually from outside the compartment & only one of them auto. That way if when going full chat the auto went off but did not extinguisher the fire because engine room fans running & not closed off or in the case of a gas extinguisher, sucked through the engine, you still have one to trigger manually when you have time to close down the engines & isolate air from entry if you have that facility.
What are you fitting - dry powder, FM200, Pyrogen, Co2 ?
Dry powder will completely stuff up the bores of the engine if activated while running.

Hi Sonic I have an S38 which has one large FM200 extinguisher fitted by the sealine factory. Speaking to Fire Extinguisher companies in the past , i understand that it is better to have one large than two smaller units. Theory being that should one extinguisher go off first that isnt big enough to cope with the volume it is protecting , and does not smother the fire , the second will not cope. One large one will protect the overall area.

Steer clear of Powder types. Really bad for engines and ancillaries if it discharges!!!

Thanks for the replies.
I am going to fit a single unit as this is better in the event of a fire and is more efficient than the 2 single units suggested.
I was hoping that some formites could have given me the cubic area or recommended size of extinguisher for the Sealine 360S.

Should be one large Fire Extinguisher!

Reason. if there is a fire small ones might not be bigger enough to put fire out completely if they go off at different times. First almost puts fire out, fire starts again and second almost puts it out second time.

One big one will totally kill the fire! Thats why Sealine and others fit one very big one

OK, so the argument for extinguishers is that two will not go ff at the same time and each individually may not be up to knocking down the fire. Just about every extinguisher manufacturer's website states that only a single extinguisher should be fitted. (I guess two, each large enough to handle the volume independently is OK, just belt and expensive braces).

An automatic engine room extinguisher really, really ought to be capable of shutting off the engines and engine room blowers, and in fact for coding purposes it must be able to do this. You should also have a manual override that lets you restart the engines if needed.

Anyhow. For the purposes of answering the question, I measured our F37 engine bay at 5.5 cubic metres and fitted an appropriately sized FM200 system with engine/fan shutdown. The controller automatically allows the engines to be restarted after 20 seconds.
