A friend of mine is thinking of dipping his toe in the boating water with his first boat and is looking at a 1990 Sealine 190 Attache with a Volvo AQ171 167hp petrol engine
Anyone had one of these and can advise what to look out for? Any other comments on this boat?

We had a 195 as our 1st boat, had it for 5yrs, great little boat.

We had no major problems with it, just the usual petrol engine difficult to start at times, the only thing I remember is to watch for cracks and star cracks on the hull and topsides, we didnt have anything major though.

As I said we realy enjoyed it, so if he decides on buying it I am sure he wont be dissapointed.

Get an engineer to look at the cam belts and pulleys as they rust up, then the belts snap!.

The exhaust manifolds rot and crack, and the usuall stuff with the legs.

Cracking little boat, good looker to, only thing to be worried about now is age, they are getting on a bit. On saying that if the price is right, they get the use out of it, I would imagine a good return if looked after.

brilliant first boat, i too had one for 5 years, hard to beat
but
my fear is the engine, go for either the 3.0l 4 cyclinder or 4.3 v6, the in between engine is a cobble of bits and are notorous for being unreliable

Agree with gms - I recall the 171 did have a reputation for unreliability; tendency to overheat amongst other things so suggest good lengthy sea trial as well as hull and engineers survey. An unreliable engine can take out so much of the joy of boating let alone the bills. Best to make sure he knows what he's buying and doesn't leave it to chance.

A well treated small Sealine will be a great boat.
