I came across a great little device in Maplins for sealing ropes. Effectively it's a mini flame thrower which converts a lighter into a gas torch. It costs about a fiver. To seal rope you tape it, cut across the tape and zap both ends. Its very quick and effective and is recharged from standard lighter fuel cylinders. I've tried all sorts of things over the years and this beats them all. The name they use is Micro-Jet.

I use an old junior hacksaw blade held in mole grips and heated red hot in the gas flame of the cooker. You may need two goes in the flame for thicker rope. You don't need to use the cutting edge - it just melts its way through.

Very cheap - Aztec would approve!
