As a new, skint, and very green behind the ears sailor I have just purchased a Seagull 170 Longshaft outboard, only to be told that out of all the Seagulls to buy I have laid out good money on a Turkey. It seems that the Con-Rod has a bad habit of giving up the Ghost if the engine is over-revved, and cannot be replaced.

Could someone let me know the best way of starting this engine without watching the thing fall to bits in front of me. It came without a petrol tank so I will have to use a remote tank of some sort to hold the 50 to 1 mix. (which I have been told is the correct formula).

In addition, could anyone let me know the best place to buy a cheap second hand GPS? I have tried Ebay but they all seem to be a bit up market , wich will be wasted on me as I only need a basic model. I am also looking for a repeater for a Seafarer 5 if anyone knows of one.

Many thanks for any help!

Cheers Paul

Seagulls / GPS and SF 5

Seagull .... there's a guy who advertises sometimes who specialises in rebuilds of all seagulls .... I think he's down Poole way .... HE must be able to sort that one etc.

GPS ..... I had same criteria and ended up buying the eTrex and have had VERY GOOD service out of it ... and now they are end of line and you should be able to pick up some bargains on eTrex range. Make sure you get the combined PC data and 12V connector complete for it as well .... then you have power unlimited and data to / from PC etc. Software updates from Garmin are freely available to keep these babies going ....

Others on ebay I would not say are expensive - but some are older than they claim ..... Beware of 8 channel/sat receivers - they are ancient and only good as long as they keep going !!!! Stick with 12 channel / sat recvrs.

Seafarer 5 repeater ...... didn't know they made one ? Its the old rotating LED type isn't it ? If you want to upgrade - you'll find the Nasa / Echopilot etc. use the same transducer so its only a head change ......
