I am currently fitting a 4 man cannister liferaft. The instructions for use are in the form of a very very simple diagram. - get hold of the painter cord , release from the cradle and chuck it downwind into the oggin. Now this may seem a blindingly obvious point to some forumites but I cannot decide whether in the event of having to use it I should take the black webbing off first. this webbing holds the two halves of the plastic outer case together. Can anyone advise please?

Not just 'get hold of' but securely tie the painter to the yacht. Chuck the canister in the sea and start pulling out the painter line, there will be about 10m of it, when it's all out a sharp tug will fire the cylinder, the webbing holding the canister will part and your raft will deploy. There is a knife in a pocket by the entrance, to cut the painter once you are all inside. Sea survival course is a good idea.
