The Seafarer 700 down below at the chart desk works fine, but I need a new cockpit repeater as parts of the display are no longer visible.

I was wondering if the Nasa Clipper Depth Repeater would be compatible. Has anyone fitted one to a Seafarer?

Cant help you with question but I have the same setup, just keep a look out on Ebay they do come up .My repeater is in feet but there is also a model in metres and strangely they both work with the same main control unit. These sounders may look old fashioned with their boxy design but they incorporate useful features ,the choice of internal battery or ships battery could get you home one day, also can alternate between digital and analogue. In shoal water the analogue signal can give an indication of soft or hard ground, when in mud the lit signal band is wider as the echo is less defined .Things may get cheaper but they dont always improve.

ebay is a good idea. i have a 700 and rather than replace it with a new model, i got a spare off ebay and just plugged it in. My flashing lights work and the repeater is fine but the digital eadout on the unit itself is faulty - only reads some numbers correctly although when I'm at the chart table the flashing lights are a reliable read out.

another idea - the seafarer transducer will work with the NASA system (I asked at the boat show) so NASA are probably able to answer your question as they must get asked about seafarer kit quite often

Are you mixing up transducer with repeater because many transducers are interchangeable depending on the type of signal whereas the repeaters are probably a bit more fussy with who they team up with. I agree NASA are best people to ask.

parbuckle,

very good point about the old style whizzing rotor type sounders compared to modern digital units.

True the new ones use a lot less power, but one can't get an idea of the seabed as the gain doesn't work in the same way; there is also the temptation to take the LCD readout as gospel, just because the thing gives a decimal point doen't mean one should trust it within centimetres !

I use 2 completely separate sounders and transducers, at the time I fitted them ( NASA Clipper depth in the cockpit, Garmin fishfinder in the cabin) that was the same price as a repeater, but gives the backup of 2 independent units.

I had several attempts at buying these off UK ebay, you probably outbid me! Ended up buying two Lowrance flashers off the US ebay. Flashers are still the way to go and if you don't mind spending heaps of money new ones are available off Amazon etc.
