Have a Seafarer 501 depth sounder but don't know fully how to use it..... simple as I'm sure it is with only three knobs. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Instructions or user manual anyone?

Three knobs = on/off x1 x6, gain, alarm

Turn on to x1 (feet) then fiddle the gain until you have a single line at where you would expect the depth to be. Turning the alarm knob allows you to set a "second" dot on the rotating display and as the depth comes down to that level you get a beep. For deeper water turn to x6 and you now get fathoms.

They are good machines and as you get used to it ... you'll find it will show up fish etc. as well !! Don't laugh ... yes it can - being a simple LED display that flashes when a pulse triggers - it will flash when sufficient mass at varied levels prompts a return.

They also run on Dry-cells or 12v .... I have one in my weekender ... excellent.

Oh the transducer by the way is same as Nasa / EchoPilot / other standard jobs ...

[/ QUOTE ] Ever thought about fitting a more modern and brighter LED? I've still got a Seafarer 3 and I was wondering if it was worth a try. It'd be good to be able to see it in bright daylight.

No not really ... have to admit though that daylight viewing is difficult sometimes ... so I mount mine inside the companionway out of direct sunlight ... but near enough a peer round corner gives good view ...

Change LED ... is the machine capable of driving a more powerful LED ? I suppose the gain control might help ?

I'll elect to leave mine alone - but wait to hear about your success ?? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just as a matter of interest, I have the opposite problem: I have a Garmin 140 fishfinder wot I bought to use as a depth sounder and it doesn't appear to have a backlight, so I can't see it after dusk! Any ideas (ie does it have a backlight and I just haven't found it yet!)? As a fishfinder, it is also brill! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Plenty of little LED' lights in Car Acc. shops could be adapted to shine on said instrument face ? You can get them in Red ... Blue .... Green .... even white .... etc.
Get a 12v one and its wired straight into same power so that switch on E/S ... on comes light.

Like most Garmin kit the backlight is controlled by the on/off button. Once switched on just give it a quick press and move the cursor to increase backlight... PS I found that from the Garmin websit, where the user manual is available... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Beat me to it!

May depend on models. The ones I looked at said repeatedly press the power button to cycle the backlight.

Anyway www.garmin.co.uk for the manuals

[/ QUOTE ] The gain control wont affect it, thats just a sensitivity control on the amplifier. It depends on the transistor driving the led. The circuit diagram in the manual does not give any details. Maybe the resistor in series with the LED will have to be changed but if the transistor is not capable of powering a brighter LED then choosing an alternative will be beyond me.

I might give it a try sometime. If I bu**er it up I'll have a reason to buy a nice modern one with a digital display, otherwise the old Seafarer 3 will see me out no doubt.
