Sea water inlet valve for engine.

I was contemplating fitting an in-line water filter to my Pageants cooling system.However on closer inspection of the valve assembly (gate valve?) it seems to be too substantial for just a valve.Could there be a filter in the assembly?There seems to be a nut on top. T.I.A. Peter.

Close the sea cock, and take the nut off the top and you will probably find a filter.

gate valves and salt water are not a good mix. The small crustaceans get trapped in the gate mechaism and prevent the valve closing completely.

I realize that Mark.Why Westerly fitted Blakes and Gate valves I'll never understand.However without wishing to tempt the Sea Gods it has been there for 36 years and apparently has not given trouble yet.I'm in trouble now I'll bet! Peter.
