Is there such thing?, if so where would Ifind one. I am running into a common problem that campers find, that is storage space. Don't get me wrong, I have enoupg weight left to get two people, but if I could use say fixed bar Sea Trailer, on weeks away cruising it would leave bit more space on board. I can't say I have seen one before.

Glastron do one: it's called the GS249. It even has it's own engine.

That's not a trailer it is the next size up to me, I ooked at it at the LBS with the KAD42 on, was tempting at £44k but it was only another £5k for the GS279. We MUST get experience before we get into these bug craft, you see when you have done the powerboat level 2 you will realise that wind on bigger craft can affect it, there is also the diesel engine course that you would have to do. Anyway I decided to cut my cloth accordingly and be grateful we have managed to even get the GS209. If we have a good time on this then we will start looking bigger, but that leads to more people on board, more safety equipment and more responsibilities under the SOLAS rules. I am still concerned that I have not selected the correct radar reflector yet see below :-

SOLAS Regulation 19.2.1.7 - Radar Reflectors

All ships shall have, if less than 150 grt and if practicable, a radar reflector or other means, to enable detection by ships navigating by radar at both 9 and 3 GHz.

MCA guidance says that if your boat is bigger than 15m hull length, you should have a radar reflector that complies with the relevant IMO performance standard (ie the reflector should have a radar cross section (RCS) of 10 square metres). Check with your supplier or manufacturer before you buy.

If your boat is less than 15m in length, you should fit the largest radar reflector (in terms of RCS) that you can.

Whatever your size of boat, you should fit the reflector according to the manufacturer's instructions and as high as possbile to maximise its range.

Grumpy,
According to the RYA web site they the MCA will not be checking if you have complied, unless you get hit by a ship. Then not only will you be dead but will also be blamed by default with a heavy fine thrown in.
Went down to the club this weekend to see how many owners were busy fitting their Radar Reflectors was it (a) ZERO (b) FIVE or (c) TEN sorry no prize for the right answer. Grumpy in passing where will you be sticking yours? /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

The one I have seen makes me twice as big = 2 x 6.13mtrs, briliant = 12.26mtrs. HOW big was the container ship that was missed on the oil tankers Radar, and sunk? This is one rule I agree on, but I am still researching to see if there is one that can make me look like the Oriana, I may have a slight chance then, certainly would keep the raggies out of my way /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: None so blind...

I thought the unacceptable result of the numerous tests by numerous pundits
in numerous magazines was that radar reflectors are next to useless and that
your best chance (in this case) would be to tow an immense steel tender
behind (of course) thus killing two birds with one stone.

Yes, SOLAS regs now require you to carry a radar reflector somewhat bigger than your boat. All of which presupposes the muppets on the bridge of the scabrous wreck plying up and down the channel even bother to look at their radar. Stick with the Mk 1 eyeball...
