On two occasions this weekend i saw fellow motor boaters speeding and generally disregarding other boaters, including other motor boaters, i let them know what they were doing, however, i do not want to become a self appointed harbour master, how far should one take this?

Name and shame them. Call them up on the vhf and point out the error of their ways to them and 10,000 other people listening on the same channel

Re: Ref sunseeker and fairline Targa owners.

A fair bit. Good friends, with skiboat experience (and fab skiers) bought a 37' boat and came down the coast "with us". Jeez, they wanted to get within 50 yards the whole time. Later, i sed look, that is too near matey. Lose steering or whatever, we crash. It doesn't have to be a great big aggessive thing - they don't know what it's like in a dinghy, another boat, or a sail boat. They don't know.

If instructor training is done on a nice low-season day, then it's you who tells newbies what "too fast" looks like.

Makes me feel justified in my posting above re the PRAT. Thanks for support but as enforcement seems impossible the only way to get at these idiots is to NAME and SHAME wherever we can. This forum for a start followed by letters to their club etc.

Re: letters to their club?

Erm, not sure if many if any powerboaters join yacht clubs. For a start, there's no racing scene for cruising powerboats.

For another, there's rather a lot of saily types who tar all powerrboaters with the same brush and make them feel very unwelcome. As a result, new powerboaters are left only with occasional instruction from (generally) cross-trained sailing instructors who may or may not inform them as regards wash and so forth, which isn't specifically part of the instructors' nor any other syllabus.

Finally, there's lots of wash in other parts of the world, some of it a whole heap worse than in the solent. In the med, powerboats are far larger and hve gigantic washes. I crossed one and lots of smashity pots etc - but our response wasn't to blame the raving idiot - it was that we should have been more ready, shouted "wash!" to advise crew to brace, and be better stowed. Of course, this doesn't always apply in restricted areas. But there'll always be some wash from somewhere.

Of course, i am not excusing individual incidents. But I waved to a sailboat to slow down from a fair speed in Chi harbour - he hadn't seen a guy up a mast which requires onlty a tiny wash to hurl about. Unfortunately, he ignored the request and shouted the speed limit at me, fairly unhelpful really, but at least showing that lack of consideration isn't the solely the domain of powerboaters - we can all be inconsiderate, more's the pity.

Re: letters to their club?

Royal Motor Yacht Club in Poole has a lot as well as some raggies, so do Poole YC and Parkstone YCs. I'm sure I've see Royal Lymington powerboats about too (?). Lots of raggies have never raced, racing has nothing to do with club membership and 'Yacht' can be sail or power.

Wash in the wrong place is inconsiderate from any source. I've shouted at club rescue boats and even small tenders in our club Marina, half planing at 4kts can do it, we even had one send a wave over our pontoon and me whilst I was cleaning some gear on it. It just requires thought and consideration something no longer in the school sylabus.

Hmm yes that would need thought and consideration - they must've waited for ages until you got all the gear out and then totally nailed it :)

I Do Not BELIEVE it

Just come back from the boat and it's Wednesday racing. 2 rescue ribs came in, one very slow, no wash, the other comes in quick, drops off the plane whilst making the turn thro' the entrance, resultant wave travels right along the back of the 1st pontoon setting all the fingers banging on the piles. Said rib then makes conversation with No1 rib who he's now caught up - then goes off at half plane back to its berth, max possible wash. No1 rib looks at me and shrugs, he then continues as he should. To add to the offence, there is a notice on the gates that we have engineers/divers working on the wavebreak at the entrance, 'please avoid wash' it says. This prat's antics were right alongside the dive boat, which is flying a large Diver Down flag. Speed limit in the marina is 4kts.

All this is INSIDE a Yacht Club Marina and the offender is a yachtie (well dinghy sailor) and must have a powerboat certificate after proper RYA training/testing insisted on by the club. What chance is there of solving this problem out in the wide wide world?

Ah, so. It's the raggy dinghy safety boat causing all this dangerous wash then!!
