For anyone interested, there is a public exhibition for the plans of the Sea Scouts water activity centre and Surrey Search & Rescue training base at Hurst Park being held this Saturday from 9:30 at 1st Molesey Scout Hut.
Attached is a flyer with more details - plans for the Scheme will be on display on Saturday.
The Sea Scouts have been without a riverside facility since the late 90s when they were evicted from their previous site by Thames Water for gravel extraction. The group has been unable
to return to this site as it is now a designated nature reserve. This means volunteers have to trailer equipment to and from the river every time the scouts go on the water, hardly ideal - there's no changing or toilet facilities either and really this important community group that gets kids into boating deserves much better.
A new water base, to the east of the Sadlers Ride car park (but upstream of Duck Ait) will provide the facilities the group needs to offer a range of fun, safe, accessible and inclusive
water based activities to a wide range of people and groups.
The Sea Scouts are working with Surrey Search & Rescue to ensure the new riverside facility is suitable for use as a training base and station for their rescue boat.
Take anything from the incredibly biased organisation known as "Friends of Hurst Park" with a pinch of salt. They've lied about what the Sea Scouts are proposing and have really acted with little respect towards the volunteers that work hard to get kids enjoying the river in a safe and friendly environment.
I hope you'll join me in wishing the Sea Scouts good luck with the proposal for an important piece of community infrastructure.
