I am looking to buy a Sea Ray 290 Sundancer. I have inspected the boat but cannot find the manufacturers data plate with hull number info, year of manufacture etc. Could someone please advise me on what part of the boat it is normally mounted? Thanks.

The ISO standard also requires it to be there. The number itself also gives you some good information:
The ISO form of the number is as follows:

AA-BBB 12345 C900

AA = country code
BBB = manufacturers code
12345 = anything the builder wants to put to ID the boat. Can be letters or numbers.

C = month of manufacture (A= January, B= February etc)
9 = last digit of year of manufacture - here 9 for 1999
00 = model year - here a 2000 model

Be aware that sometimes the dates are a bit out if mouldings have been sat around
for a while.

The earlier US form of the number is similar but does not have a country code - I guess that the Americans consider the US the BE the world!

I always thought that the middle numbers were the manufacturers NMMA yacht certification number ( on US boats anyway).

Like you say the year of manufacturer can be misleading if the hulls have been made and hanging around. When Ive bought new boats Ive always stipulated that it must have current year on the HIN number, as thats the first thing people will look at if Im wanting to sell it on ( just saves confusion IMHO)
