Hi,

Looking at the changing out boat think we have a short list thus far of either a Sea Ray 250 sun dancer or Maxum 2400SCR. Both are 1996 and fitted with Mercruiser 5.7 V8. I am looking on feedback on these boat please:
• What are like to own.
• Performance and handling.
• Fuel consumption.
• Pros and cons.
• Any other info welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

they are actually built owned both by Brunswicck
but u should know the following:
Maxum was a brand as a medium between the cheaper Bayline and more upmarket Searay
the quality of a Searay is better to the Maxum especially in the age u r referring too
I know a bit the 1996 models, the Maxum is a better head sea boat, but the Sea Ray will have the advantage following and beamish seas
consumption will be very similar, but should be better for Maxum as it is a lighter boat

ehh last thing Maxum has been discountinuned by Brunswick as of last month, so the brand is over in a certain way, altough it is fair to say Maxum was always about being an upper market Bayliner

New boat

Both very capable boats but if it were my money I would choose the Sea Ray over the Maxum.
Maxum/Bayliner were built by the Brunswick group is I'm sure your aware & shared simillar poor quality fittings (of the same era) & are widely accepted as being built down to a price however Sea Ray has always been regarded as a higher quality brand so if simmilar money start there.
Bayliner & Maxum models have made significant improvements in recent years so Im only really talking older models here even so I'd be looking at the Sea Ray.

The engine is a considerable unknown, at 13yrs old it could be the deciding factor, I would look for reciepts for servicing & recent manifolds etc as these will be £££££££ if not done.

As above look at the quality of the fixtures & fittings, interior joinery & evidence of damp (especially in the Maxum).

Happy shoping

For a boat of that age I would forget the Maxum and go Searay. Big difference in build quality that shows over time. The Searay was built like a brick and has lasted well. Most boats still have original cockpit cusions which shows the quality. Slightly less performance than the Maxum but better sea keeping and if it gets choppy you will be glad of the Searay extra weight.

Maxum was built to a price and at 13 years old I would not risk it. I had a 1999 Maxum that at less than 18 months old had the interior disintegrate due to poor quality. Mind you I had just taken it from Barcelona to Menorca by sea and it was only 22ft! In short Maxums were built as lake boats but a Searay could take to the Sea.

Cheers
