I have just contacted Euronav to update my charts, only to be told that the 3 packs of 10 charts at £100 each, which I purchased 2 years ago can not be updated. Instead I have to purchase a single UK pack that covers all UK for £100. This does not sound so bad, until you realise that you then have to upgrade your software which again is 2 years old (originally cost £450 I believe) for the bargain sum of £50. (Therefore my Charting Pack that cost me £750 is now of no use)

I do not need all the UK charts and to update using the old system, which is no longer available, would have cost £2.50 per chart or £75.

What I find most upsetting that they have not played it straight, surely they sould have contacted all of their users and notified them of the changes, the last Email I received stated about the UK upgrade but did not state the need for the software upgrade, surely for existing users they should absorb the software costs.

So it seems once they have got you they feel they can just keep charging.

Anyone had anything similar with the other systems??

If I undersrtand you correctly, you were going to pay around £90 to get your charts updated and now you have been asked to pay £150 to get a) improved software b) your charts upgraded and c) charts for the rest of the UK.

I'm struggling to see the problem. Even if you don't use any of the other charts, you are paying £60 for an upgrade of £450 software. Surely that's a bargain rather than a ripoff?

I work for a company the resells software by hundreds of different publishlers. Upgrade prices are normally around 40-60% of the price of the new full version. So at 10-15% for Seapro, I think you're doing OK.

Snip: I'm struggling to see the problem.

well I can!
Upgrade does not mean the same as improvement
Additional charts are not needed and so are of no benefit
150 squid is 60 squid more than 90

I'd stick with the existing charts and software.

Looks to me that the Seapro at £150.00 is good value, shouldnt complain about that.

I would though, be pretty P'edd off having spent £750 only a few years ago, now being expected to scrap it as the software is not supported.

Recognising your spend with Seapro, presumably in their early days when they were looking for support, you would think they would review your position.

A bit harsh. I don't expect any technology to supported forever.

Compared to the G-Chart pricing, £125 for a set of BlueCharts that cover Lands End to Denmark isn't bad. The real problem is for those owners of GPSPlotters that can only use G-Charts... in which case, a watertight justification for spending money at the GPS shop (or, if insufficient funds, cursing roundly and often).

You make a pretty convincing case for paper charts.

I guess one should ask when buying electronic charting for a guarantee that updates will be available at a stated price for a stated period. If you work on the assumption that after that date your software is scrap and judge its value on that basis you won't get any nasty surprises. You may also decide that £750 for 2 years use isn't a good buy.
