I am having a Sea-me installed, hopefully as I write this, I have not bought a sounder. I thought I saw an article about a DIY sounder job. Does anyone else recall this or am I re-calling non-existent events? Alcohol and age..... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

i though a sea-me was a radar detector and also "amplified" radar reflector. What exactly do you mean by a sounder ?

You have a box with a red led to display when you have been 'hit', you can also get another box to give you an 'audible indication' of radar contact!

I see. I would go fo rthe audible unit too so long as you could switch it off. I can imagine it getting a little on the nerves in busy areas. Must remember to turn it back on though !

Freestyle has both. I don't often have the Sea me sounder switched on, because I have to be in the saloon to hear it, and if I'm in the saloon I don't need to hear it because I can see the red light flashing to indicate activity, and it's constant bleeping is distracting.

I suppose it could be useful if you want to be warned when a radar source comes within 10 miles or so, at night, or in fog. If that information would make you do something positive that you wouldn't otherwise do (e.g. look more carefully at your own radar), then it may be worth it. I'm unconvinced.

I think the beeping in fog would cause just enough fear to cancel out the good feeling I would have from knowing I could (maybe) be seen.

SeaMe and AIS seem like the ideal combination, with AIS being much chaper if you can only afford one or the other.

Unless it's class A, AIS will only allow me to "see" them, whereas See-Me allows them to "See" me!!

I think I'd choose the latter, but there again, in the Med, unless you get down towards Gibraltar, there aren't too many narrow places like the English Channel!!
