... well, near Sandbanks this morning:

Is there any fresh water run off there, otherwise Mr Google suggests that sea water freezes at around -2 deg C (lots of variation depending on salinity), that's cold if the sea temp gets that low, even if it is shallow!

It is Sandbanks area (the rich bit) and the ice is on just a few inches of water left behind at low tide, so not in the deeper bits. It isn't uncommon and in the distant past I've taken a club launch and mooring barge out to lift and inspect moorings, breaking the ice as we went, now that was cold. Poole is pretty shallow all over so will never retain the heat as much as deep water, then in places like this it is not much more than a saltwater puddle, but it makes for a good picture. We had no snow here at all yesterday just rain too. On TV yesterday there was a 75 year old taking his daily dip in the sea off Bournemouth and he had a thermometer with him that showed IIRC 3C by the beach and 5C farther out but still only waist deep.

Yesterday morning Poole Harbour had a coating of ice - about 1cm thick - covering most of it as far as I could see from the Poole Yacht Club bund wall. There was a thin ribbon of clear water along the main channel. All the marina had a thin coat of ice - a small stone thrown at it skittered along, a larger one went through. Seagulls were walking about on it.

Yes, crunchy sounds as I boarded my boat in the Haven. Rim of ice around the bund wall where the drop in water level co-incided with the early morning temperature drop. Have photos somewhere of Holes Bay frozen over in 1962 with people walking to town from the back of the British Seagull factory.

Went down to Wareham today (Sunday) to check the boat over - all ok.
A bit of a problem getting the dingy out onto the river from Ridge boatyard, the basin had an inch of ice on it, luckily something had been out before me and broken it up.
Quite a nice day, not toooo cold.

Just loaded up some pictures from a site visit on Friday. This is a tidal stream just behind the beach in Pevensey Bay.
