As part of a previous post about paint coming off my props and me having to have boat lifted for sea cock repair, the fred drift brought up an interesting point about choice of valves to use Gate or Ball.

So dose anyone have a definitive answer.

Cheers

Pete

While mine is out of the water having the shaft done, Ive taken the opportunity to have all four seacocks replaced with ball types.
The outlet toilet cock was stuck open.
Balls much better and less subject to corrosion IMHO, also only takes one lever pull to operate instead of having to do umpteen turns on a gate valve.
Much more positive.

Steve.

Don't go for Gate Valves, they tend to get either stuck open or stuck shut.

Get De-Zinctified (So it wont fizz with Electrolysis) Ball Valves - about a tenner so no excuses on cost!

Had all my Gate Valves changed last winter for Ball valves and glad of it.

Cheers

I bannished all the gate valves on mine as soon as I took possession. They are an accident waiting to happen

Whilst I have no real experience with seacocks on boats, never having had to replace one. From a purely engineering view "Ball valves" are loads better than "Gate" in every application I have ever needed, and that is quite a diverse usage, therefore I would replace seacocks with "Ball valves" as and when I need to.

Balls it is then

Posted this as others have said gates are better for some reason, but decision made Balls it is, that's what I wanted for all reasons stated here and will get them in DZR Brass.

Cheers all

Peter
