I am doing maintenance on my water intake as it leaked a bit last year. It is a threaded fitting coming through the hull with which the sea cock and strainer tubes is screwed. what is the best sealer for the threads?
any help thanks

bob

Almost any thread sealing compound from the plumbers I would think, PTFE tape, or as Colin suggests some heavy grease. I'd use Foliac Graphited pipe jointing compound 'cos I've got a tin full or ptfe tape

IMHO best on the market is a product made by Locktite called Lock Seal - its the mutts doublies.

Where can I buy this? Google hasn't helped.

I bought it from the engineers' suppliers : J & L Industrial Ltd.

It's expensive but a little goes a long way and it seems to last a long time in storage. I bought some in 2005 and let the man who is currently decorating our house have some last week to cure a leak in his steam wallpaper stripper, which it did!

Sikaflex 291 will do the job but it's a PITA to open the tube, drill out the hard stuff left over from last time, get some fresh to come out, clean up the incredibly messy stuff afterwards. My liquid PTFE came in a concertina tube, just press the end to get exactly what is needed.

My son introduced me to it. He works on big mobos, superyachts, etc doing refrigeration and A/C. There are hundreds of joints in a typical system and he tried just about everything to seal them before finding liquid PTFE. He says that since he found it he never had a single leak.

Nut Surely lol, you ALWAYS have an odd bit lying around on a boat, the last bit comes out with a stanley knife no worries, and rebed the odd deck fitting at the same time... cost nothing then.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Quick finger full, wipe finger with rag n white spirits..
does a cracking job.
