Would any kind person be able to mail waypoint lists from this years Reeds covering SE and adjacent European waters? I bought CA equivalent of Reeds which is very good on harbours and tides but no waypoints.

Use last years Reed's... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Buy a book of waypoints.....

Best of all work them out yourself when you need a route, much safer than books, IMHO

I work out all of my waypoints its dead easy using a paper chart as check.

What terrifies me is the thought of going from Published waypoint A to Published waypoint B in poor visibility in a motorboat at 25 knots on autopilot on track setting with the accuracy of your electronics these days means that there is a very real risk you will one day meet someone going on autopilot from B to A also doing 25knots and hit them at a closing speed of 50 Knots.

why would you want to put published waypoints into a GPS ?

Use your own from a CHART, no margin for error then !

No one ever makes errors transcribing waypoints from their own chart to a GPS then?

What terrifies me is the thought that 25knots in restricted visibility is considered a safe speed. I do accept that it is used as an example - but..........

I accept that a cruiser will stop quickly but 50 knots means that you are closing at 5 miles every 6 minutes or, at 1 mile visibility - 72 seconds, at 1/2 mile vis - 36 seconds.

Not a lot of time to see, assess, decide and act.

I agree that using published waypoints is something that should be viewed with extreme caution for the reason stated above.

By all means use them as a guide but why not offset them by a cable or so (provided it is safe to do so) and reduce the chance of the 'honey pot' effect round published waypoints.

I d agree with jimg, though it assumes you have the paper charts. I find it beneficial to know WHY that was the waypoint !
