Just a thought prompted by the current Scuttlebutt identity crisis...

I've been following NAS's blog, and thoroughly enjoying it. This led me to wonder if those good peeps who run blogs & websites could post some of their tales here on scuttlebutt. It might be a good counterpoint to the "How do I .." "What is..." and "Grrr Gnash mobos/wash/red diesel...(insert current bete noire of your choice)" posts. I can hear some of the "been there, done that, got the salt-stained Mustos" brigade asking what's so interesting about a trip from the Hamble to Ipswich.
My point (probably incoherently expressed) is that I sometimes think we get a bit too intense here, and lose sight of some of the simple pleasures that inspire us to go boating in the first place....

As I have never visited the site you refer to and just to help those of us who are a bit slow, are you saying that SB has lost sight of the sailing/boating agenda?

If that observation is correct, was'nt the 'lounge' set up to keep sailing/boating and social chat apart?

But I would also add that as old habits die hard, there is still an element of idle chat on SB.

What is to be gained If the interests of those who want to discuss sailing/boating experiences are diluted to another forum?

errm...crossed wires?

I was trying to say that folks are creating websites/blogs which contain good tales of sailing - my point about Scuttlebutt is that we have lots of debate about technical/regulatory etc issues to the extent that posts about actually sailing seem (to me anyway) to be few & far between. Hence the comment as to whether those who have a tale to tell could also post a version here on S'butt, to spice up the mixture here.

I too agree. I read articles on this site during work hours exclusively (while I'm waiting for other processes to complete, honest!!!). So I am more than wary about visiting off-piste sites, but I do avidly read medium length sailing commentaries.
MacHurley22's blog page about falling in was a recent exception and I would see this sort of thing cut-and-pasted as a very good post. Not all the best posts attract replies, reading them is often good enough.

Um...... its not a very exciting forum that other place, as I'm the only one who can post on there!!!!!!

Seriously, its nothing more than me keeping a diary of my sailing related thoughts, concerns and activity and placing it on line for all to read.... for me its cathartic in as much as I enjoy relating this stuff, and it encourages me to remember why I sail.... hopefully for others its an interesting insight into the realities of buying a boat, and helps to avoid some of the rose tinted specs getting too effective!.. but if I'm honest I'm doing it for me, not them!

I still love SB, and will be an avid and regular contributor here... I think Beancounters point was simply to suggest that ocassionally I post some of the less mundane stuff on here as well as in my blog to play a small part in helping SB from getting too repetitive.......which I am happy to do on the basis that if anywhere will, this place will soon tell me not to bother if its not interested!

Ok, I'm awake now, thought blog etc was some other forum!!! (it is friday, I'm halfway through a business plan but can't keep my mind off getting down to the boat at 5pm!)).

Now I understand, I also agree, but lets try and keep a balance, some of the debates are addictive. We would'nt want endless 'my trip from Chi to Bembridge last weekend', would we?

I can dig out some material, you will all soon let me know if its up to standard.
