I had to get out of the way of a 40 footer off Calshot yesterday afternoon. Yes we were both motoring and he was on my port bow but ho hum. The yacht had the anchor locker open but unsecured, a bight of the bow warp dangling in the water, fenders out both sides and the five crewmen visible were all on the phone. No one was helming.

Is this hot calm weather lulling some off us into false security? Or was this a sailing mag doing a piece on what not to do?

Eet vos us. Ve had just deanchored and ver sorting ze boat out when ve spied on our starboard quartet a zmall craft approaching helmed by a kamikaze Bin Laden lookalike zo ve all phoned our priests for ze last rites. At ze last moment ze small craft vent off in search of other prey ... it vos a close call but ve survived. Ve always keep ze fenders out in ze Solent as zere are zo many craft about it seems der appropriate safety measure.

Sod the Solent, give me the Solway anyday. Sail all day without seeing another boat. Bliss.
