I know this is going to bring lots of derisory comments ...... but wouldn't something like KY be better? It's water soluble.

WD40 would be worse than useless. The problem is that the sealing ring on the pump has dried out, and will need to be re-lubricated. I dont know what your pump uses, but believe that a bit of silicon grease is the answer, but will require a dissassembly. you may have some temporary relief from the noise by the use of a bit of cooking oil flushed through the system.

No, because it will dissolve in the water and wash away, then no lubrication.

Waterproof lubricant is needed. I put a big dollop of vaseline down every now and again because it sticks to anything - some will tell you that it will rot the seals but I have not found it to be so.

I think Peggy recommends teflon grease. Undo the four screws on the pump housing and remove the piston, put the grease around the piston ring and replace.

I took this advice and it worked a treat. we now have a very slick and quiet toilet pump.

If I remeber right Peggy said this should last all season.

That screeching is sound of rubber seals o-rings etc being worn away against the inside of the pump cylinder ...the toilet desperately needs lubrication.

Many people just wait till the toilet starts to squeak and become hard to pump, then pour some mineral oil or vegetable oil down it. That’s ok in an emergency, till you can get home and do it right, but it’s not the way to maintain the toilet. Not only is this very hard on the toilet, but it’s a never-ending job because anything poured down the toilet washes out in just a few flushes.

Why is it hard on the toilet? Because a toilet doesn’t squeak or become hard to pump unless it needs lubrication...Waiting till it squeaks to lubricate it is like waiting till an engine starts to smoke to add oil.

Ever wondered why a new toilet doesn’t need any lubrication for at least a year? It’s because every toilet leaves the factory slathered with thick Teflon grease that takes a full season or more to be flushed out. Replacing it just once a year is all it takes to keep a toilet pumping smoothly. And it’s only a 15 minute job—just open up the top of the pump and put a healthy squirt of it into it…pump the toilet a few times to get it all through the pump, and you’re “good to go” for the entire season. And, by keeping the pump lubricated this way, you extend the life of the seals and valves, reducing the need for rebuilds.

To lubricate a Jabsco toilet: depending on the age of the toilet, you'll either need to remove 6 screws that hold the top on the cylinder or loosen the hex nut around the piston. Lift up the top...put a HEALTHY squirt of the grease inside...pump a few times to spread it all over the inside of the cylinder (not just around the o-rings....the purpose of lubrication isn't to soften them up, it's to provide protection between the rubber parts and the pump cylinder wall as they move up and down against it)....replace the top. You're done for the year.

The best time to lubricate a toilet is in the fall, as part of winterizing. The Teflon grease protects the rubber parts in the toilet from drying out, which also extends their life.

K-Y wouldn't be a bad choice, but it's much more water soluble than synthetic teflon grease and therefor would wash out much more quickly and would also dry out in just a few days while the boat sits...so it wouldn't last long. However, it's the best thing I've found for getting hoses onto fittings when replacing hoses.

I\'m soooooo sorry

I really do apologise but, as soon as I finished reading your reply and your 'signature', the first thought to spring to mind was "Peggy Hall, talking sh*t since 1987".

I am really, really sorry and apologise profusley, but I just had to share this thought.

LOL! It's ok, Colin...I'm used to it. After nearly 20 years, I'd better be! :)

Btw...I love your little icon! Where did you find it and how can I get one?

I 'lift' my smilies from this site - http://talk.thebabycorner.com/misc.php?do=showsmilies

Find the smiley you want to use, right click on it and click on 'properties', highlight and copy the 'address' and then using the image markups ([image]address[/image]), paste the address in.

(ps. Drat - Colin got there first....)HeadMistress;
Easy, Peasy - just pinch it(the avatar) from Colin, in his present frame of mind I'm sure he won't complain.

Here's what you do:-

Move your cursor over the picture;
Right Mouse click,
Select "save picture as",
Take the picture default, and hey presto, pic: is save in "My pictures" - wherever that is on your machine.
[/list]

Not very nice to do, but it's done all the time!
We All owe you a favour for your multitudinous and highly detailed posts, this is but a very small return.

regards,
