Got busy sanding and varnishing my tiller in the garden shed today and found a problem. The bit that protrudes abaft of the rudder post is fitted with a nice wrap-around brass cover that had been varnished. Underneath the varnish it had clearly been wire-woolled so it was scratched to glory. How can I best buff down the scratches and restore the shine? I have a picture in my mind of a buffing disc attached to my electric drill and a tin of paste, but I can't find anything like that in Homebase. Any ideas? Thanks.

Use 'tomato ketchup' - this will clean up your brass much better than most other products. Its not a paste which will just make smaller scratches.

What a novel idea. It's going to make an awful mess of my £7.99 polishing attachment though. I'll certainly try it. Thanks!

Am I lucky, the local Lucas Depot has a bead blaster, if possible take the bit to one,(or very fine sand or shot blaster) if not start with a grade of emery the size of the average scratch, work down to the finest (Dry)emery, then change to the finest wet/dry that you can get, takes time but gives a brilliant finish, use figure 8 strokes.
