I scratched my gel coat today bringing the boat back into the mooring, the wind caught the boat then clipped the pontoon. This has scratched the gel coat a little, it is still blue just took the shine off it where it is scratched. Is it worth trying to fix ? If so do you think it will polish out a little and give it a bit of a shine again ?

Whats best ? has others got small scuffs & scratches on their gel coat is it part and parcel of boating, Is it worth me crying forever more and call myself a donkey ever min of the day ...or should I chill out and relax and expect more marks on my new boat through time ?

Fear not. Your boat will respect you for minor war damage - scars are very 2007 so the more the merrier

When it comes to the spring, take your gel repair man and show him all the scratches and he'll sort them out so the boat looks good as new. Then you'll ding it again and so the cycle goes on...

Chill and enjoy. At least you've got the first one out of the way - always the most emotional

Gel repair man - where do you find them in scotland ? Just Any good boat builders ?

Thanks for your support - I thought i was going to need some councilling for this one

Try asking at the local chandlers or brokers office?
We are about to buy a boat with a blue hull, covered in scratches, but having it cut back and polished, two days work max.

Boats are for using not polishing or wrapping in cotton wool.

If its a major structural repair sort it now otherwise once a year is adequate

very minor not even showing the fibreglass I was doing about slower than snail speed when i cliped just annoys me.

We've all done it mate, it's annoying at the time, but as others have said the way to tackle this is to get them all taken out in one hit at the beginning of the season. Absolutely not one to worry about - and now you've scratched it at least you can relax a bit and worry less ... about scratching it.

Cheers
Jimmy

Rubber Duck has five such blemishes. One coutesy of eby, one by essex marina (I think) and the rest by me. My boat bloke will mend during the winter, & next year I hope to be more used to her. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

if not too deep lightly cut it back with 1200 grade paper and the polish it back up with farecla G3 preferable with a mop cos it wears your arms out by hand /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

after having just repaired ALL my blue hulled scratches, my wife was having a refresher with an instructor and managed a right crunch into a pontoon cleat. "Oh, well, says the instructor, it happens"
Strangley enough, that was perhaps one of the best small lessons I ever learned about boating!
Blue hull? Oh dear! Blue is a total nightmare to match. In fact, several gel-men just said, no thanks, I dont even want to try!
Id be very wary of cutting back or sanding, as its all too easy to make it much worse. Certainly for now, leave it, and see if its really so "bad" in the Spring! Maybe you wont notice it by then!

The first scratch on my blue hull was very long and very deep....I was upset for weeks. Funny though, I can't remember which one it was now!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks guys for all your comments, after a restless nights sleep over it I think I will take all comments on board and forget about it after all when my sis gets her hands on the boat am sure it will be scratched a lot more. Its is certaily not deep if anything it has just scraped the shine layer off.

Thanks again

Chris

What, don't let the wife drive the boat? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Had another small glance at it today and i have decided it is not work a repair it is so small no one would see it unless you are looking for it - I feel better but a little more nervous at bringing her back in now. I will get there. learnign the hard way comes to my mind all the time just now lol

If you have a bayliner (which I suspect you have) you can get a repair patch paste from aquatic
