Tayvallich Inn - was supposed to be good this year although did not make it myself
Am looking forward to the opening of the Creagans Inn on Loch Creran - drove past last week and it looks like it has potential, do not know when it is opening yet though, will report back if any good
tayvallich inn, i thought, was poor value for money this summer - big price - small prawns.
living on past reputation imho.
the loch melfort hotel better value in my view.
well that shows the different experience people can have at the same locations
loch melfort was possibly the most disappointing night in an hotel I have had - this was last year not this year I admit but it was really poor - damp rooms, not clean etc. All in all not somewhere I would now go back to which is a shame as the location is hard to beat
re tayvallich, as I say I had also not been there this year but knew many who had and they were saying that it was one of the better years, not as good as in the Grafton days when it was consistently good year on year but still pretty good.
I guess a good restaurant gets it right every time whilst those not of the standard vary night by night let alone season by season
Kimberly Inn at Findhorn. Not been there for a while but a couple of years ago good food and real ale in abundance.
Also Shore Inn at Portsoy but that's just been sold so may change.
The crinan might serve good seafood, however its expensive (VERY) and is incredibly unfriendly. Would never recommend this place, its an example of the WORST kind of Scottish hospitality. IMHO.
Otter Ferry, Loch Fyne, there is a great establishment with free moorings. There is a prize for the first person to get the old girl to crack her face but otherwise a fine place.
Second the Whitehouse reccos, Pierhouse at Appin was very good food and general pub ambience. Nice shiny moorings as well.
The Seafood temple in Oban ( the converted public toilet building near the sailing club) does magnificent seafood at remarkably reasonable prices - I went 5 times this year. Are there visitor moorings there??
In tobermory we also had a great meal at the Anchorage, the largest ( and one of the most tasty) brown crabs I have ever seen, and the langoustines had been landed 45 mins before we ate them .
It seems that Alain & Dorothy Miailhes retired at the end of October 2007 and left Otter Ferry to reside permanently in France.
This is something of a shame, as, under their management, apart from its culinary excellence and the frostiness of the service, the restaurant became famous for M Miailhes' appearearance at Dunoon Sheriff Court on a charge of threatening behaviour and racially aggravated disorderly conduct. He was alleged to have called a neighbour a "fat ****** English ***".
From the January 2005 archives of the Dunoon Observer;
<ul type="square"> ENTENTE CORDIALE BREAKS DOWN AT OTTER FERY
HAVE you heard the one about the Frenchman and the Englishman who live and work next door to each other in Scotland? Well there’s no punchline, and the scenario is no laughing matter, after both men ended up in Dunoon Sheriff Court on Thursday January 5, over a heated dispute and accusations of racism.
Frenchman Alan Miailhes owns the Oystercatcher restaurant and bar in Otter Ferry, Tighnabruaich and stands accused of threatening behaviour and racially aggravated disorderly conduct towards his neighbour Englishman Malcolm Staines, who along with his wife runs the ‘Wee Shop,’ next door.
The two businesses are less than 100 feet apart and are regular haunts for passing tourists and yachtsmen but in court it was alleged that 59 year-old Mr Miailhes called his neighbour a fat ****** English *** and added: “You should go back to where you came from.”
Mr Staines, who has a heart condition, claimed he was once friends with his French neighbour up until he applied for an off-licence for the ‘Wee Shop,’ whereupon he stated there was only animosity, including refusal of service in the pub.
But Mr Staines denied his complaint was a means to damage Mr Miailhes as a licensee, however the 57 year-old Englishmen also alleged that Mr Miailhes had threatened to go to environmental health officers over cooking food within his premises and the police over the condition of his van. Although not accusing the Frenchman of carrying out these threats Mr Staines was called upon by the Department of Transport and environmental health officers and noted that the police had received a complaint that he drove without a licence or insurance.
Mr Miailhes denies that he acted in a disorderly manner, shouted, swore, threatened Mr Staines with violence, made a racist remark and threatened to throw the Englishman’s car keys into Loch Fyne on July 11 in the Oystercatcher car-park, when it was alleged the Frenchman, whilst preparing for Bastille Day in memory of the French Revolution in 1789, charged up to Mr Staines as he sat in his vehicle on a disputed piece of land between the two men, whereupon Mr Miailhes is accused of being offensive, abusive and threatening by telling him: “Move your ******* van. I don’t park on your side, you don’t park here.”
The trial will resume in March when the defence case will be heard. [/list]

[/ QUOTE ] We have only been at lunchtime but have been severaL times and found them friendly and the food excellent. The scallops on a bed of hot rocket salad are delicious and there are so many of them - 12 - 15 great big juicy ones - that it is filling enough without tatties or bread. It's £14 - if you think that is expensive for that quality then better stick to pub grub. Have also had the seafood stew at the same price and it is superb.
As for friendly - we went there once with friends and decided we couldn't afford to eat there that day so asked if we could buy some bread and they sold us some of their home made loaf at a very reasonable price.
I believe it may be a different kettle of fish in the evenings - is it an evening experience that you are referring to?
I second your views re. Crinan.
We were there one evening and having decided that the Dining Room menu/price was OTT we had "Bar Snacks" - the like of which we've not had since. Superb food and friendly with it.
Was a couple years ago, mind you.

I agree with you, we were in the Crinan basin for a night last year and didnt have much choice but to go there, meal for 6 came to £300 and was pretty poor, the service was unfriendly almost to the point where you felt the staff thought they were doing you a favour serving you.
Dont get me wrong I'll pay £300 quid for a meal but i'd expect great food, good atmosphere and a frendly service.
