Just read the YBW report about the captain, reputedly boozed to the eyeballs whilst in command...

Duncan MacNiven, who had recently spent two weeks at sea, was drinking at a pub in Oban when news of a possible storm prompted him to set off early at 5:20am...

Drinking in an Oban pub at 5 a.m...?

I can't decide if I'm shocked or envious.
 
Was there an episode of Parahandy where Dougie, The Tar and Macphail ever contrived a wee engine room 'Nip Warmer' , or 'Still' as we call it down south?
 
Aye, we have some pubs which open at 5am. Been in once after an all night session a good few years ago. Pub till 1, night club till 5, back to pub after club kicking out time...

There are harbour, or near to harbour pubs that are allowed to open certain times either side of high water. It's a throw back to the days when one needed high water to get in to the harbour. This can result in 24 hour opening times. In addition there have always been early opening pubs in Scotland for certain trades e.g. city fish/fruit and veg markets, steel mills and ship building yards for night shift workers coming off shift. Most of those pubs have gone but some still exist with the opening hours. Its quite common in transit towns where harbours and railways are close together that ridiculously early opening hours exist. After all a working man is entitled to a drink after a long dry spell.
 
A visit to a French village cafe on market day in the winter will see stallholders tucking into a breakfast of thick black coffee and a large Marc at 7 in the morning. Good preparation for when the customers come at around 8.
