Been out of circulation for a couple of weeks and hope the suggested swallie is still on. Before I went away, the Woodside Bar in Doune was put forward. Unfortunately Superstrath and possibly other likely peeps couldn't make it, but I'll be there and look forward to meeting any other forumites who fancy an informal pint and a chat. I'll log on later to see if anyone else is going. Cheers!

Bar: The Woodside

Location: Doune (the one between Stirling and Callander)

Date: Saturday 19 February

I was just a nipper, Was a mechanic for one of the Top teams, from 1984 to 1989, We won the British Hillclimb Championship in 1987, with our Pilbeam MK47, with 5.0L Brabham Repco.

What cars have you raced, and do you know what the dates are for this years meetings, as i still go to view on occasions???

Cheers

Alistair.

BTW, Was very sorry to hear that Jean Asher Died last year.

Wasn't it '88 when Wardle won with that car? Griffiths won in '87 with the MP53 Hart.....
You WERE drinking with the big boys then, esp. the late Jim Thomson. I see a bit of his son Tim, we're both on the committee than runs Doune.
Back then I was in a '68 Elan - still got it. These days we do the British Leaders with a Supersports Mallock. Great Fun. Fast cars and alcohol - ye canny whack it. Also used a Seven, other Mallocks, and an outing in an Argo 2 litre F3 - at Doune.
This years meetings are 16/17 April, 18/19 June, 17/18 Sept.

So did you do Barbon?- I did OK there in the early 70's in a Cooper S

Never done Barbon. Typical Season - 3 Dounes, 3 Shelsley Walsh, 2 Prescott, 2 Gurston Down.
The game has moved on a bit - we're seeing speeds in excess of 150 on some hills.
Lots of shots of the big boys at speed.
The nose of the Mallock came off my car on the finish line at Shelsley last year and went past my ear at 99mph. Interesting.
This is interesting. Any more hill-climbing sailors out there?

Yip, Sorry you are quite right, I went home last night and looked at the trophy, Its was 1988 that we won the Championship, And yes, my mate is Charles Wardle, We were up against the likes of Jim and a young Tim Thomson, Roy Lane, David Grace, David Gould and his son, I think Sean, Max Harvey/Martyn Griffiths and others.
The unique thing at that time was we had an Older car MP47, and beat the newer MP's and DaVid Goulds Home built car at that time. I toured the whole of the UK with them, driving to a meeting after work on a Friday, and then back up on the Sunday night straight to work, Was tiring, but great fun.
My friend Charles started of in his origional Lotus 7, then moved onto a Mallock that he shared with if i remember Jim Robinson, then onto the Pilbeam who he shared with Chris Dawson.
If you are on the committee, then you'll know Bill Wood, It was his Son Tony that i got friendly with and got me into the hillclimbing, and i was good friends with him and his sister Lesley. Unfortunalty i haven't seen them for a few years now.
I think i'll need to try and make the June Doune. Meet up with old friends.

Cheers

Alistair.

Agreed.
Don't go to Scotts after being asked £3 for a pint. I asked for Arran Blonde but got some Belgian brew.
After a glorious day-sail yesterday crew and I went to McIntyres looking for a pint. Over-chilled gassy stuff in a bar full of children and loud telly football. We ended up in the Byre for some Roosters and Deuchars.
We'll try the Harbour next time.
BTW, Mudhook in Fairlie is good. Pity Troon doesn't have similar.
