Scotland - GPRS and mobile phone coverage ?

You're probably sick of me asking where coverage is available - in which case don't reply and I'll crawl into a corner !

Had some great responses on SW England coverage and information on GPRS contracts. All that's great for this year as we can't get any further. However the dream of a summer in Scotland continues (been trying for years and things keep getting in the way !). We have been able to get Vodafone coverage in the Great Glen in the past (lockkeeper accused me of being a "bloody yuppie" as I answered a client support call while going through a lock !) but it's how we keep on working to pay for the boat.

Can anyone tell me about coverage for GPRS and mobile phones in the Caledonian Canal and perhaps elsewhere - Inverness, West Coast etc. ?

Our current phone is Orange but we're happy to change if we need to.

TIA
Penny

I found that GPRS needs a good signal for a reliable connection, at least 3 and ideally 4/5 signal strength but I don't remember too many problems in Scotland.

I use GPRS regularly, and at SWMBO's house in Wilts, regularly get 0 to 1 bars. I can send and receive on GPRS at these levels, even when I can't make voice calls.

Hi Pragmatist,

We live and work out of Portree on the Isle of Skye and find only two areas locally that we can't receive the vodafone signal. One is the Rum area, the other the Sound of Sleat and Loch Nevis (Not usually a problem there as the Old Forge is a great place to use the landline - very helpful and great craic).

There are some anchorages on the Western Isles where the signal comes and goes a bit, but generally we can get some sort of signal and are able to use the laptop/e-mail etc.

One other thing to remember up here, is that Highland libraries and many public places have very cheap internet access, should the phone signal fail you.

Best of luck. Kevin
