Scoooting up the mast...

i have the same equipment as PeterGibbs's but will just add :
1.one more rope as a safety line in case of emergency
2.the 8 piece device for desending without using the ascenders
all my equipment consist of 2 ascenders, one 8 piece, one climbinng and one safety ropes, bosun chair or harness ! this way, i have changed my standing riging alone !
very happy & can climb the mast alone!

If I have understood Bejasus's photo it needs a rope 4 times longer than the mast. Is that right?

I am using 300ft of Regatta Multi-Braid as it is very collapsible. Mast height is 55ft and this gives plenty of spare to be able to renew the attachments once in a while. As I said, the whole rig fits into one of those large white pails with a lid on.

Can you confirm that these are ratchet blocks, as well as having a jamb cleat?

yes they are Harken Ratchet blocks. I can get you the numbers and tell you how the jam cleat is adjusted, if you wish.

to add a correction to previous info. Only the jam cleat block has the ratchet in the on position. The upper block is in the off position, otherwise it would not lower.

previous correction regarding only one ratchet setting was wrong. I just checked and both are in the on position, this allows for friction control when lowering, as the rope has to be under control and not run away too easily. Just pull the rope sideways out of the jam-cleat and ease the hoisting line over the top sheave. It is quite a smooth operation and any sudden jerk will lock the rope into the jam cleat again.
