Where I can find the Lloyd's, Norsk or BV scantling rules for a 29' wooden gaffrig cutter? the Lloyd's Portuguese Office said that they don't have any doc about it.

I have Gerr's book "Boat Strenght", but you know, States and Europe doesn't have the same aproach concerning wooden boats and amateur boatbuilding.

Thankx

I have a copy of the 'Rules & Regulations for the Construction & Classification of Wood Yachts' by Lloyds Register - my former survey colleague used to be a non-exclusive classification surveyor to LR.

It is quite an old copy, from 1966, but I doubt that much has changed over the years - what would you like to find out? I could scan and email the relevant pages to you, or calculate the Scantling Numeral.

'Scantling' - the dimensions of the structural parts of a vessel which includes the keel, keelson, frames, ribs, bulkeads, stringers, deck beams and floors etc.

Some people think it only refers to wooden construction, but that's not true. You can talk about the scantlings of a steel vessel etc as well. Talking about the scantlings of a GRP boat is often more difficult as a lot of the strength of the hull comes from the hull itself with its bonded in bulkheads, although many GRP hulls have stringers and a sort of frame bonded to the hull as well. For example, our current boat has a massive 'frame' bonded to the hull to spread the load of the mast step and to support the keel fixings.
