sc29

my word! i am pleased we sold ours before all these came out!!

we had a few minor problems with the D3 160's but nothing to be worried about. (sensor faults mostly although the igntion barrel was always coming loose)

as for the boats themselves, we liked ours, especially the roof which was perfect for UK waters. for us it wasnt the right boat but what i like, others hate so thats no judgement.

IMHO, 160 is underpowered for the boat. go for the 190's as believe the extra fuel burn is minimal and the extra power would have been very useful, expecially when she was a little dirty.

I feel like I need to come to the rescue of the SC29 here!!

Mine certainly doesn't have any blisters on the hull. From what I can gather you always get a few 'lemons' no matter which brand or model of boat you choose. Having a good survey helps to identify what not to buy, I'm sure the blisters didnt appear over night.

I think that it is brilliant for Sealine to have offered to fix the problem at their cost and I don't think this fact should be overlooked. It just goes to show that they are a good and responsible company and I think that its very positive to own a boat built by someone like this.

I am happy to be classed as a fan of SC29's, I'm not saying that they are perfect but they are a great boat!!

To my knowledge sealine have always been customer focused, helpfull & a pleasure to deal with but I have to wonder why so many of their designs, in some way or another have had problems.

I know that Sealine have nothing to do with the faults associated with the volvo D3's & so cannot be blamed for the many engine problems but why do we always hear of structural problems?

What is worrying is the amount of times we hear of stress crazed hulls (have had this in my own experience) & now delamination! or whatever it is.
I cant help wondering what the owner would feel when a prospective purchasers surveyor points to a problem like this in such a new boat.
I would also be quite alarmed if I happened to own one as once the surveyors findings are passed through the industry then all subsequent surveys will be a nightmare for the owner.

I do like the look of the sc29 but there are not too many about, I wouldnt like to guess for how long sealine would offer support for it & if any more develop faults as mentioned above then I seriously wouldnt be looking to buy one.

I think my gut feeling is to avoid d3's for some years to come until they manage to resolve issues and generate reliability to match kad32's and such like
it was typically a bad start for me, 1st boat i see, cant start either engine. only 2 years old with 40 hours. i suspect low hours because of the problems, i could be wrong

The D4's series seem to have a much better reputatation.

Maybe its a shame they dont put these in the 29. Probably be over powered, looks like they would fit, the d3's look tiny the engine bay.

But i feel sealine are the victim really, until volvo sort the d3 properly they are putting people of big time.

The D3 is not as bad as you think. If it was, Sealine would not use them they would put in something from their own American stable.

To disregard the D3 I think you will rule out many good sub 30ft twin engined newish boats. The D4's were an option on the S29, although I have never heard of any being fitted. Its not just the size, but the extra wieght to power trade off. I have seen some with a single D4 and a single D6.

Bavaria also fit D3's to their sub 30ft boats. I don't think Volvo have anything to sort out on them, they work fine.

If you look in this months MBY you will see Volvo have reworked the D3 so much so its all most a new engine , it now goes up to 220 hp . Bavaria are using them in the test boat.

Funny you should say that Sealine are putting American Cummins in SC47's the new F46, clearly there are problems with D3's or the OP would have just been able to start the two in the SC29 he went to look at.

Not sure the D3s would be much good in a SC47.

"clearly there are problems with D3's or the OP would have just been able to start the two in the SC29 he went to look at". Clearly there are not - mine start fist time every time.
