flying down to the SBS and looking for a top hotel for the night within walking distance so we can leave all SWMBO's luggage (!)

last year we stayed at the De Vere which we thought was vastly overpriced for B&B & restaurant was certainly not 4 star - can anyone recommend something ?

Cheers

When you say "top hotel" that's about as "top" as it gets round there I am afraid. Its showing its age now, you can either stay out of town or the De Vere and head on down to Oxford Street in the evening for a decent meal.

If you think the De Vere was poor then I strongly recommend you do not book any other hotel in Southampton Town!

I'm with Hummer on this one. If you didn't like the de vere then you will not like the alternatives which are the Ibis/novotel cheap ones further up the road.

If you don't mind being a bit out of Southampton I can recommend the Botley Park Hotel. (McDonalds Chain - no not the hamburger McDonalds:eek:)

We stayed there a while ago the night before a cruise and it was very nice. The room was super (exec room) the staff were wonderfull. There is a little swimming pool and from memory the food was fine - a bit bistro-ish but nice.

It was about £15.00 from there to Southampton Docks in a taxi

There is also the Botley Grange Hotel which I have stayed in many times but not recently. Ask for a room in the main part of the hotel - not one of the boxy rooms . It is in lovely grounds. I cannot comment on the food in the restaurant lately but it used to be good.

Hope you find something

I agree with May - the Botley Park is probably the nearest decent hotel to Southampton, with the possible exception of Chilworth Manor, though that's a bit "Footballers' Wives". As an alternative, the Balmer Lawn in Brockenhurst is quite nice, and only about 1/2 mile from Brock Station, with direct trains to Southampton Central (which in turn is about 1/2 mile from SIBS and served by a shuttle bus).

Southampton is a hotel wasteland, I'm afraid.

Botley Grange - been there many times for weddings and Christmas parties (OK it is 3 - 4 years since my last visit) even allowing for the fact I have only ever had to pay for the booze I have never felt the Grange was good value and wouldnt waste my hard earned there.

OK thanks - theres very little left accom wise so will just go for the De Vere and hopefully find a nice wee restaurant locally

thanks for your help

Ok I can help on this, trust me I have eaten at every place in town!

They will all be busy (maybe not this year....) Oxford street really is the place to go and Oxfords (there are two get the middle one and not the corner one) is probably the best.

BUT book and if it is busy be prepared for that and get a few cocktails down your throat.

You will get a good if not excellent meal here (I eat there about 4 times during SBS)

Enjoy

Re: SBS Hotel

You are right about the DeVere not being 4 Star, it is Southamptons only 5 Star Hotel (not sure how they got that rating without Air Con).
For a meal go to Bouzy Rouze, but book now to make sure you get in.

ps Things must be bleak for the show if you can still get in a local hotel in August.

Probably too late now and may not suit you but if I wanted a good hotel to do SIBS I'd probably stay in the New Forest in or near Brockenhurst and catch the train in (about 15 mins max). Carey's Manor or Rheinfield House are the obvious choices but there's some really good Inns around too. Last train home is midnight for the fast train and about 2am for the stopper.

Thanks folks I will try and book one of those restaurants in Oxford Street - funnily enough it was the same last year with the Devere having late availablity - probably because they charge well over £200 B&B for the 2 of us !

And make sure its the one n the middle and not on the corner!!!

Some nights you wont get in others there will only be 10 or 20 covers.

Bloody Mary is good

OK thanks thats great we got a table booked - Oxfords Bar restaurant as opposed to Oxfords Brasserie !

I thought the De Vere Grand Harbour had lost their 5 Stars, and been downgraded to a 4 Star.

Only live 2 miles down the road, so only stayed there once, after a works xmas party.
I didn't think it rated the 5 Stars then - and it hadn't been open long!

You could be right, and I would not be suprised.
Haven't stayed there for a couple of years now (since I stopped working in Soton) but always enjoyed my time there. Best breakfast in Soton.

Never been to Oxfords but I would definitely second the recommendation for Bouzy Rouge for a meal.

The Boozy / Bousy Rouge is fine if you like your crockery in that early eighties dare I say 70's white and maroon effect and the salt and peeper in those stainless pots....

Food ok but seriously back to the 70's.....
