Having just barely settled into our new (to us) Rodman 800 Fly that has just gone back on the water following two weeks of fettling, an SB Offshore 28 has become available. We planned to look a this same SB while we were researching our new craft. The SB was announced as sold and no others were available secondhand and so we settled on the Rodman.
We are really taken by the SB and the more spacious living area and great view for all while cruising and are now thinking of trading. Does anyone have any knowledge of how the SB might compare on the water in terms of ride comfort to the Rodman. And finally - Am I mad?

Well I do dribble a lot. There is always a ring of mess around my plate when I have finished eating and I sing in the shower like a deep fried kitten. I am also completely committed to to my partner, Christine, being able to see the view as well as me whilst motoring, and she can sit next to me! The craft only has one Yanmar 200, not two, and weighs considerably less so the costs will be dramatically less. All stuff I knew before we bought the Rodders. But the SB wasn't on offer then.

It depends on how you look at it. We are negotiating the Rodman for the SB and £3000 in our pocket. If we had been able to buy the SB the first time round we would have been better off. But that's not an issue. Can't change history.

One of the Dolphin boats out of Gib is an SB Offshore, more like 40-45 I'd say.

Saw the hull when she arrived looks pretty serious hard chines, deep keel, has to take lots of passengers out on varying seas so I reckon the skipper would have thought long and hard first. A bit Targaish I'd say.

Just had the SB sea trial - not nearly as stable as the Rodman - I know I shouldn't expect it to be - but it didn't feel one third of the Rodman. With only half the weight of the 800, she was affected by the seas much more severely than I remember my Karnic 2250 was. The toss-up remains; the SB, a boat that suits local, regular days out with a very sociable interior, but would not endure the Channel crossing expected of her (the boat would be fine but Christine would arrive worse for wear), or the Rodman that excels at challenging water but is a bit of an overkill for what she will be used for most. – Perhaps I can’t be helped!

Sea trialed a Rodders 1250 last year, built like a brick out house and very sure in the roughty toughty stuff but then Rodman build for the military so some their over kill works its way into the pleasure stuff. I think you would be hard pressed to find something as good as your Rodman in the windy stuff but having said that the SB is a good boat and is also sold to the police and coastgaurd so no real faults, a bit lively but capable.

Took a second sea trial in the SB. This time with a full tank of fuel (the previous trial was on an empty tank) and a full water reserve. Different boat. Still not the same as the Rodders, but along with the other positives (for us) it cut the mustard.

The deal was done.
