We now have another silly TV program called the all time most famous Dutch person. I think the UK had a similair program in which Sir Winston Churchill was the winner. Dutch contenders are now limited to a top 10 which include persons such as Johan Cruijff (the only contender still alive), Anne Frank, Erasmus (one of the first filosophers who equaled men and women intelligence and was again religious oppresion) and of course Michiel de Ruyter (of Chatham fame).

I might go for Michiel myself, since he is the only "boaty" person in the list.

My big interest is, which person comes up in the mind of a non-Dutchie?

Thanks, Rene.

What about the little boy with his finger in the dyke? Or does the programme go out before 9.00 pm?

As John Cleese once said (in different words): Don't mention the Germans!

Painters and sailors

Both van Gogh and Rembrandt are in the top 10. Escher (to me the most interesting one), Vermeer, Messdag, Mondriaan didn't make the top 10.

Michiel de Ruyter is the only sailor included in the 10 ten. Abel Tasman, Maarten Tromp and Willem Barentsz are in the remaining top 100. No place at all for Connie van Rietschoten (Whitbread winner)

Funny nobody mentioned Freddie Heineken (18th) so far.....

Even more funnier (??), the program is called "Greatest Dutchman" and no rules, limits or applicatiants are known. So top 100 also include "famous" musicians such are Marco Borsato, Tjiesto and Andre Hazes...... right....

William of Orange -- which one?

Presumably William I, leader of the Dutch war of liberation from Spanish occupation during the late 1500's, whose coat of arms is now the Dutch flag. Though Prince William of Orange who became William III of England following the 'invasion' of 1689 is possibly better known in Britain.

Extrasordinary ! I'd remebered Escher (I agree, most interesting) but had a complete mental blank with Vermeer, one of my great favourites. It just goes to show, one needs time to think about these things.

In the recent version in Britain - and I can't say I like the format particularly - my money was on Queen Elizabeth I. (A great huntswoman of course . . . )

Well, I have seen this pretty girl and she seems to get a lot of visitors. Only seen at night though so may not be known too much by the general public. She does do a public service....!!!
