I am bringing my Fairline 29' back to the Thames this year and just wondered if anyone has any experience of Saxon Moorings in Old Windsor? We are fairly antisocial and really like the idea of not being in a big marina type environment, so this ticks our boxes, but I would be interested to hear of any of your personal experiences; good or bad. Also, what is access to this part of the Thames like and will there be enough things to keep me occupied throughout the year? Does anyone know how long it takes to get to Hampton from Old Windsor? Sorry, so many questions, but I am very excited to be bringing my old girl home!

Just been told Saxon's don't have any space for a 29', so do any of you have any other suggestions as to where might be a quiet place to moor. I would prefer something London side of Maidenhead, but would go as far as Henley if I have to. Thanks!

You could try Thames Ditton Marina just up from Kingston. A little cheaper than the rest. Small basic and friendly enough but definately not clubby. Crane on site as well as a very handy commercial slipway.

There's Windsor Racecourse Marina and some quiet spots at Bray Marina - which is the prettiest of the larger marinas? Also have a look at Tom Jones Boatyard at Romney Lock?
We've been at Bray about seven years and would recommend this part of the river - just sometimes a little busy around the smaller locks at peak times ie: Bank Holidays!
Hampton Court to Old Windsor - approx. 4/5 hours, depending on traffic.

3 Marina suggestions for someone that doesnt want to be in a marina
Wilsons in Sunbury is a great spot although mid river so you have to row out . The row out is actually very nice and i often just rowed up river and into the creek on my own to do a bit of fishing and be antisocial :D
Ive not moored there for a couple of years ( moved just down river ) But i hear the family have decided to take over the business after both Gordon and Connie passed away :(

Hi, from your inference in the original post I would say that most of the marinas between Windsor and Marlow won't fit your requirements, They tend to be bigger, busy places, poosibly not what you are looking for. depending on how far upstream you are willing to go there are 2 lovely, quiet, laid back sites, one is just by Hurley lock and the other is at Hambledon. Look them up and see what you think, of course space may well be anissue at this time of year as everyone is back in the water, we are full where we moor. Good luck though.

What was once Harris' Boatyard at Laleham (between Penton Hook and Chertsey locks) has some quiet moorings with own private gardens. There were a couple up for grabs last time I looked (was a little while ago now) but probably worth a call. Not sure who administers them now but start by giving 4 All Marine who are based at Harris' a call on 01932 567744. Very helpful guys.

I moored at both the pontoons and finally had a garden mooring.
FourAll administer the pontoons and the garden moorings are let through Claud Waterer estate agents in Chertsey.
We moored there for about 14/15 years and only moved because of a house move to Burnham on Crouch last year.
Now we moor on the Crouch at Bridgemarsh Marina. Not like BYH, more likea proper yard as Richard Harris ran.
We will return to the Thames for a holiday perhaps this year or next.
Happy days

Ok, Thanks everyone for your advice. A lot of the Marina's are now full, and I need to be moving my boat onto the Thames in the next few weeks. I have made enquiries into the garden moorings, but they only have one left. It's coming in at £3080 + Vat - does that seem reasonable? I keep drawing blanks everywhere I go, so unfortunately I am going to have to make a compromise here at go for a full on marina type mooring. I live in Bucks, so for convenience, I can drive to Windsor or Bray and anywhere in between in about 20 minutes. I think Penton Hook will be a bit further to drive to. Obviously, I want to get the best deal I can, and Windsor is coming in at £3087 including VAT. Does anyone on here know what the freedom berthing with MDL is like, as it sounds good? Bray is more expensive as is Bourne End, which would have been perfect location wise, but they don't have any availability. Andrew M - what are the quiet places near Hurley and Hambledon? I have looked at so many online now! Peter Freebody won't take my boat as it isn't made of wood!!! Thanks again...

Bray is worth any tiny differences. Theres lots of parking, usually close to the boat, so you don't have to lug stuff miles. Nice toilets and showers, and a good restaurant.

Join BCC and save £££'s on many suppliers (Discounted Chandlery, Riverside Brasserie, Engineers etc) as well as making plenty of nice friends.

It's a great position too, in a very pretty environment. Bray should cost the same as all the other MDL Marina's, and once moored, you can swap between them at will! Great for tidal trips, or just a change of scenery.

And Bray have a 'Fleet' which you could join!;)

Hi,

Here's the one at Hambledon:
http://www.hambledenmarine.co.uk/

I've no idea about prices or availability there, but it has always looked lovely and peaceful, not at all big busy marina style. Have only spoken to them to ask about temporary moorings for Henley week and they have been nice and friendly.
Will try to find the Hurley one although I wonder if that is Freebodys, didn't realise they were that exclusive with regard to wood/grp

Ok, bad news... The moorings we have seen at Hurley appear to be the Freebody ones. As above you could try Harleyford, it's nice there and the grounds of the estate have a lovely feel to them as you drive down to the river, excellent facilities. Mark Pearce that runs the moorings is a super bloke and is immensely helpful.

You're not going to forget that are you! :)
Actually I can confirm Bray has the same mooring charges as Windsor and they do have room for a 29 footer.
Must be worth a look??

That's interesting - when I phoned MDL earlier for prices, Bray was about £500 more expensive than Windsor. It is also a little bit closer to where I live, and biggest plus of all - The Waterside, Fat Duck & Cliveden are very near! I am going to do the rounds over the next few days and visit all the Marina's that are contenders. I just didn't want a really busy Marina packed with weekenders and kids screaming everywhere. I know that makes me sound like a real old fart (I'm 35 btw!), but I just want to use my boat to chill on and relax, not necessarily to socialise. Are you sure there is definitely space and do you know for sure it is the same price as Windsor? Thanks all...
