Probbly the best way to see what the Backwaters has to offer (including the seals) is to join Tony Haggis on one of his trips.

Although, we have a boat at Walton, we still join Tony's tour - the kids love it and I am sure you will not be disappointing.

I'm all for the seals. Clearly, they have no fear of us sailors in the general way, from the number of times one sees them nearby and the numerous reports of seals getting into dinghies and so on, but I wouldn't choose to approach them when on the shore. I have never actually been into Oakley creek but observed them from nearby in Hamford Water. It would be sad if yachtsmen started to intrude on them, and I would not object if modest measures were imposed to prevent the recently increased numbers of small craft from disturbing them.

I have noticed that abroad, at least in Germany and Sweden, they are far more protective of seals, to my mind excessively so, and approach within a mile or so may be forbidden.

Went into Oakley Creek on Whit Bank Holiday Monday (& followed the coaster in, thought strange it came in then). Karina went in ahead of us, followed by another fishing boat type with "See the Seals" or similar plastered on the side. Thought Karina had a rival, but both boats seemed to be sharing a buoy in the town creek later. I've seen more pups in Kirby Creek, close to the top of Horsey Mere in recent years.

Not at all.

Tony is just suggesting that seals should should be left in peace to pup.

A bit of self-regulation of the few would be much better than some draconian ruling by the local authority.

there seem to be a lot of obsolete signs around the Backwaters - perhaps replace them with "keep away from seals" or something suitable. Problem is the law abiding will do it, but then again they probably wouldn't have wanted to bother the seals anyway. The Romford Navy types who tear round the Backwaters at high speed believe any such rules don't apply to them.
