So left penton hook friday morning, lunch in st kats and overnight in ramsgate. So far so good, me, my kids and their cousins aboard. (15, 16 and two 17 year olds). Sunny day great journey.

Left ramsgate at 8, met up with the cousin's parents near Rye. Took them aboard with the intention of an hour's tubing before dropping cousins and parents back off. 4 kids in tube, 2 fell out (as you do) 1 of the ones that stayed in broke her arm. We've still no idea how.

So, i felt awful as I rowed them ashore, the parents did the hospital duty and we continued to the itchen.

We only hit the edge of the storm as we crossed from beachy head to selsey, and the boat was purring across the relatively flat sea. As i did the engine install myself last year it still gives me a buzz when she goes so well, even when i'm a bit cold and wet. I was oblivious to sails being blown out in the solent at the time.

As we entered the solent I hit the wake of a fast ferry rather hard. The kids were asleep but hit the cabin top and the plotter cut out. I slowed and rebooted, all was well with the plotter, and it was time the kids woke up anyway.

Then as we entered southampton water, 220 miles down 7 to go, a gnarling noise, massive vibration and loss of power. I anchored to clear the props, nothing. Tried again, thought i'd try and get back at displacement speeds, no go. Anchor down ball up, coastguard advised, she called the lifeboat. So I was rescued by the lifeboat. Nice chaps, one a knowledgable mechanic tried to fix it to no avail.

So what's wrong? My 15 year old daughter didn't tell me until we got home that the engine mount was shaking. So best case scenario smapped engine mount, perhaps weakend by the wake flight incident. Worst case is blown engine, but she's only got 220 hours on. Fingers crossed for a mended boat and more importantly a mended arm.

Lets hope the 3's thing is a myth......

Sorry to hear about the saga's, seems it all happens at once. Be very careful with the towing of more than one person at a time, if heads clash and one gets knocked out unconcious it can be treacherous, plus my insurance Mardon, do not cover more than two people at a time on toys /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hope the arm gets better soon.

Hmm.
When I posted this pic a while ago with a comment along the lines of it looking rather dangerous I was roundly told it's normal and good fun.

having been watching when one of mine broke his arm on a bouncy castle I can vouch for the 'how did that happen' syndrome - I couldn't believe it when he said his arm hurt and it becme obvious it was serious!

Sorry to here about your woes - at least the arm should mend well at that age.

Whisper - yes i was embarrassed especially as my son took about 200 pictures of the rescue!

HI Jez!!! how are you. I read about the new boat very exciting.

Lakesailor - what a fab photo.

ENGINE UPDATE. NEVER BUY YANMAR.

I was deligted to discover it wasn't blown internals, but just the cush drive thing that bolts to the flywheel that the drive shaft slides into.

I thought 200 quid and I can do it myself so not too bad.

TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED POUNDS for the PART.

Thank you Yanmar. You can buy a mercruiser outdrive for that. They are taking the P. And for that price they don't even bother stock it.

With mercruiser you can order parts from the states if here is pricey. Yanmar prohit this and don't allow their US dealers to sell outside their territory. This would be illegal in europe, don't know about the US. If you know a source of cheap or used Yanmar parts please let me know. [EDIT - just checked the mercruiser part is $520 from doug russell so the yanmar is about EIGHT TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE.]

Ouch. You have my sympathy.

Make sure you check the mountings and the alignment when you replace the coupler (if that's what it is that has died), else you'll be forking out again in another 100 hrs...
