So left penton hook friday morning, lunch in st kats and overnight in ramsgate. So far so good, me, my kids and their cousins aboard. (15, 16 and two 17 year olds). Sunny day great journey.
Left ramsgate at 8, met up with the cousin's parents near Rye. Took them aboard with the intention of an hour's tubing before dropping cousins and parents back off. 4 kids in tube, 2 fell out (as you do) 1 of the ones that stayed in broke her arm. We've still no idea how.
So, i felt awful as I rowed them ashore, the parents did the hospital duty and we continued to the itchen.
We only hit the edge of the storm as we crossed from beachy head to selsey, and the boat was purring across the relatively flat sea. As i did the engine install myself last year it still gives me a buzz when she goes so well, even when i'm a bit cold and wet. I was oblivious to sails being blown out in the solent at the time.
As we entered the solent I hit the wake of a fast ferry rather hard. The kids were asleep but hit the cabin top and the plotter cut out. I slowed and rebooted, all was well with the plotter, and it was time the kids woke up anyway.
Then as we entered southampton water, 220 miles down 7 to go, a gnarling noise, massive vibration and loss of power. I anchored to clear the props, nothing. Tried again, thought i'd try and get back at displacement speeds, no go. Anchor down ball up, coastguard advised, she called the lifeboat. So I was rescued by the lifeboat. Nice chaps, one a knowledgable mechanic tried to fix it to no avail.
So what's wrong? My 15 year old daughter didn't tell me until we got home that the engine mount was shaking. So best case scenario smapped engine mount, perhaps weakend by the wake flight incident. Worst case is blown engine, but she's only got 220 hours on. Fingers crossed for a mended boat and more importantly a mended arm.
Lets hope the 3's thing is a myth......
