The rest of the boat is in satin sparyed lacquer finish, and the cabin sole is starting to look a bit tacky.
Anyone got a sure fire winner for durability and satin-ness?

Cheers

We've used Epiphanes "rubbed effect" varnish with considerable success. The first coat has been Epiphanes gloss followed by the aforementioned.

Be interesting to read the forum opinions.

My understanding is that satin is not as long lived as gloss due to resistance to cleaning etc, but happy to be proven wrong.

It is popular because small spaces ( ie boats) can seem bigger than in-yer-face full on glosswork. And appear calmer when all those downlights are on.

I am having very very good results with International goldspar at the moment. Not necessarily down to me but the fact that if the can is warm and the surfaces properly warm too ( heater on before and after), it,ahem, does what it says on the can and flows out well and dries quickly. I have been using softish crappo disposable brushes for first 3 coats and 2 inch synthetic Purdeys for the 4th and final coat, loverly brush. 20 year old polyurethane rubbed with 240 between coats on a wood block,, the teak components coming up really well, surprises even me.

I suspect that the UV filter added to Goldspar enhances the patina of teak in some accidental way.

Since I read a recent mag review of all the posh varnishes, Epis, Toncinwhotsit etc after one year on teak in the UK and Med, and they were all basically not great, I am sticking with what works for me !

On the floors ,which were done last in Trinidad (island) I suspect that indeed one pot Epiphanes was used as it is proving very very hard wearing. IIRC that is what they use in the humid tropics..Impresses me. From bare wood I would prefer 2 pack or epoxy then polyurethane.

i've used laminate water based varnish stuff for the sole and epiphanes rubbed effect for other varnish work. I must say laminate finish stuff lasts about 3-4 seasons and is seems very durable. One plus side is the cost its alot cheaper than epiphanes for the cabin sole
